Job summary
As an experienced registered midwife with a strong commitment to improving the safety and effectiveness of maternity services, this role demands a proactive and passionate approach to clinical leadership. The postholder will provide expert guidance within a multi-professional team, fostering collaboration and excellence across the maternity service.
The role involves supporting the review and dissemination of the Maternity Risk Management Strategy, promoting a team-based approach that prioritises clinical quality and safety. Staff engagement is central to this, with the postholder enabling all team members to actively participate in identifying, addressing, and evaluating patient safety and risk issues. Effective communication and management of incidents through the Datix system, in line with Trust policy, is essential. The role also includes cultivating a culture of informed questioning, challenge, and analysis to ensure that lessons are learned and improvements are embedded.
To support governance and compliance, the postholder will help implement systems and control processes that monitor adherence to both internal and external standards. They will liaise with families to ensure the service meets its duty of candour responsibilities, maintaining clear and compassionate communication throughout any investigation process. Where appropriate, they will organise and support debrief meetings following serious incidents, ensuring that staff are supported and learning is shared.
Main duties of the job
- Provide leadership, guidance and expertise within the multi-professional team for Maternity
- Develop strategies and frameworks that ensure the Maternity service meets its obligations for Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) and that it meets the Trust standards for clinical governance including risk management
- Support the review and dissemination of the Maternity Risk Management Strategy, fostering a team approach that ensures clinical quality and risk management remains of the top priorities within the division
- Enabling all staff to actively participate in identifying, actioning and evaluating all patient safety and risk issues
- Leading and supporting the communication and management of the issues through Datix in line with policy
- Developing a culture of informed questioning, challenge, trend analysis and triangulation to ensure lessons are learned
- Supporting the implementation of systems, control processes and risk management arrangements to support monitoring of compliance with internal / external governance
