Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen on the Band 6 Occupational Therapy general rotation which currently offers posts across St Mary's hospital which is the major trauma centre for the North West London network, Charing Cross hospital which is a specialist stroke and neuroscience centre and Hammersmith hospital which houses the specialist cardiology centre.
The successful candidate will have a chance to work across a variety of specialities including, ICU, neurosciences, trauma, orthopaedics and surgery, acute specialist medicine (general and elderly), acute medical unit, renal medicine, oncology and respiratory medicne . All teams are well staffed with band 8 and 7 senior clinicians supporting each specialty team to ensure essential professional development opportunities are available from the moment you join the trust. Flexible working arrangements/ fixed term/ secondment contracts will also be considered.
The post holder will need to have excellent communication and organisational skills and be able to work effectively with both their OT and multi-disciplinary team colleagues.The Trust offers a supportive environment to develop your career and you will benefit from opportunities for professional development and further education. Within each rotation the post holder will have access to regular supervision, in-service training and journal clubs.
Main duties of the job
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care.
- To undertake a comprehensive assessment and re-assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentation for a designated caseload to establish clients' physical, cognitive, perceptual, psychological and social functioning.
- To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, to ensure improved compliance, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
- To communicate effectively, using a range of verbal and non-verbal skills, with patients and carers/family to motivate, engage to participate in therapy and to ensure an understanding of their condition.
- To deal sensitively and constructively with patients and carers/family, who have high levels of anxiety frustration or aggression caused by a variety of issues, such as pain, poor prognosis or limited mobility.
- To plan and prioritise own caseload independently on a day-to-day basis to ensure patients are appropriately seen, in conjunction with the priorities of the team and to give assistance to other team members as required.
- To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your own work and current practice through the use of projects, audit or outcome measures, whether individually or with the support of senior staff.
