Senior Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician - Surgery

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly, dynamic, innovative Surgical Pharmacy team dedicated to providing high quality ward based clinical pharmacy services. You can expect to see interesting surgical patient admissions and work on acute surgical wards linked to a Major Trauma Centre.

The post-holder will enjoy working in a fast paced environment and high patient turnover. Surgical specialties include General (gastrointestinal), Bariatric, Vascular, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Elderly surgical rehabilitation and Neurosurgery.

We are looking for someone with passion in this area of work in hospital pharmacy. You will be enthusiastic, motivated and a patient focussed pharmacy technician. You will work with the Surgical Pharmacy team to help implement, deliver and improve medicines management to surgical areas. You will need good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team. We need a friendly, approachable, adaptable individual willing to learn new skills and be committed to their CPD. You are a registered pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or undergoing registration. This is a full time post and will be required to participate in the weekend working and late duties as per rota.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be committed to the Pharmacy agenda of providing high quality medicines management support to surgical ward areas and Pharmacy. You will be a keen advocate for patients driving patient centred care and good patient experience.

Key target areas will be:

  • Medication history taking
  • Assessing patient's own drugs
  • Counselling patients on medicines for discharge
  • Facilitating medicines management issues in Pharmacy and surgical clinical areas
  • Ordering medicines
  • Stock list reviews with the multidisciplinary team
  • Controlled drugs (orders and returns)
  • Medicines management audits
  • Training junior Pharmacy staff and Nursing staff on medicines management related issues
  • Attending and participating in relevant meetings
  • Facilitate the efficient use of medicines (medicines returns, assist theSurgical Pharmacy team in medicines expenditure surveillance)

Essential

  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (pharmacy technician) or in the process of registration
  • HEE Medicines Optimisation Programme (MOP) or equivalent qualification (or will undergo the ICHNT in-house Ward Skills Training)
  • ACPT Accreditation required or will undergo CPPE ACPT course

Desirable

  • Short courses relevant to practice, to include supervisory qualification such as Personal Supervisor (PS) training
  • Recognised Medicines Management qualification (Certificate of Medicines Management for Pharmacy technicians - CMMPT or equivalent)
  • Educational Supervisor or NVQ assessor to A1 standard or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • At least 1 year experience of working in a UK hospital pharmacy and at least 3 months of ward- based experience

Desirable

  • Significant MMPT work experience in a UK hospital
  • Practical experience with an electronic in-patient prescribing system
  • Experience of training of pharmacy, nursing or medical staff
  • Experience working as a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician (including medication history taking, reuse of patient's own medicines, ordering medicines, patient consultations, discharge services and self-administration) in a busy clinical environment
