Specialist Occupational Therapist - Specialist Medicine

Job summary

We are recruiting for a highly motivated Band 7 Occupational Therapist to work in the Specialist Medicine team at St Mary's Hospital.

We are looking for an innovative and a highly skilled OT who demonstrates passion for Specialist and Elderly Medicine, strong leadership skills, excellent communication and team management skills. You will provide expert assessment and treatment for patients on medicine and medicine for the elderly wards.

This post is the highest band OT in the team providing OT leadership. You will be supporting and supervising occupational therapists in managing their caseload, complex decision making and discharge planning. We have a strong improvement culture across our teams, and the focus is on delivering high quality care for our patients. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate the ability to make confident decisions for discharge planning to support the ward MDT.

The role includes providing education to other members of the integrated therapy and wider multidisciplinary teams. You will have opportunities to contribute to, facilitate, design and lead service improvement projects that aim to enhance and promote the value of occupational therapy in Specialist Medicine.

Main duties of the job

  • To formulate and deliver an individualised and specialist care plan / therapy management programme based on advanced knowledge of evidence based practice, advanced clinical reasoning skills and a wide range of specialist treatment options. As a specialist clinician to provide a second opinion where required.
  • To provide clarity and communicate complex clinical findings to the patient/carers to gain valid informed consent, prior to any intervention. To work within a legal framework for those patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To communicate with patients in a way that empowers them to make informed choices about the management of their condition and engages them in the planning and delivery of treatment.
  • To take into account cultural, linguistic, medical, emotional, psychological and physical factors that may prevent this engagement and utilise resources available to facilitate communication.
  • To use advanced communication skills to frequently manage and resolve difficult situations, at times involving aggressive or challenging behaviour from patients or carers.

  • Relevant Postgraduate clinical qualification

Experience

  • Significant recent clinical experience in relevant clinical area

  • Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for therapists, MDT members, support workers, students and apprentices
