Job responsibilities

3. Key areas of responsibility 3.1. CLINICAL PRACTICE

3.1.1 To carry out radiographic examinations across a range of modalities to the agreed standard of the department.

3.1.2 Complete high-quality examinations consistent with ALARA principles.

3.1.3 To maintain a high standard of patient care and comfort and be patient focused at all times.

3.1.4 To work in an efficient and effective manner at all times.

3.1.5 To plan, prioritise and organise own workload.

3.1.6 To vet request forms for validity and appropriateness.

3.1.7 To evaluate the quality of imaging acquired and determine whether repeat or additional acquisitions are required.

3.1.8 To undertake intravenous cannulation and administration of medicines in line with departmental policy.

3.1.9 To report any untoward incidents and equipment failure to the relevant modality lead radiographer and where appropriate medical physics expert.

3.1.10 To report incidents or near misses via the DATIX system and to report defective equipment as soon as possible.

3.1.11 To work unsupervised as and when required.

3.1.12 To work using own initiative but be aware own limitations and seek guidance when necessary.

3.1.13 To work flexibly based on requirements of service.

3.1.14 Contribute to minimising hospital-acquired infections.

3.1.15 To carry out duties which may be considered necessary and consistent with the responsibilities of the post.

3.1.16 To vet request forms for validity and appropriateness

3.2.1 To liaise and communicate effectively with other staff both within and external to the department regarding patient care and ensure that effective communication is implemented and maintained. To communicate in such a way that upholds Trust values at all times.

3.2.2 To maintain close and appropriate communication with patients, where appropriate, to optimise their experience and comfort in utilising imaging services.

3.2.3 To keep accurate records of patient examinations in line with departmental protocols.

3.2.3 To be familiar with the Imaging IT systems and to ensure all examinations have been recorded and archived as expected.

4.1 LEADERSHIP

4.1.1 To deputise for more senior radiographers as and when required, providing continuity of service

4.1.2 To supervise junior members of staff to help expand their knowledge and skills.

4.1.3 To exhibit role model type behaviours, such as appearing on duty promptly and appropriately dressed and behaving in a professional manner at all times

4.1.5 To motivate members of the team and provide reassurance and guidance.

4.1.6 To highlight any process or issue that may impact patient safety to their line manager.

4.2.1 To undertake any formal or informal training required to fulfil the needs of the post including all mandatory training in line with Trust and Department policies (e.g. Manual Handling, Infection Control and Trust Statutory Study Day.)

4.2.2 To expand and update your own technical and professional skills.

4.2.3 To assist in the clinical instruction and assessment of student radiographers.

4.2.4 To provide mentorship, guidance and support to fellow radiographers within the trust

4.2.5 To participate in the departmental appraisal system.

4.2.6 To supervise other staff undertaking intravenous cannulation and medicines administration

4.2.7 To participate in and fully contribute to departmental and professional activities such as audit, participation in policy/process production and taking an active interest in patient safety initiatives.

4.2.8 To undertake continuous professional development in line with Society and College of Radiographers guidelines and Health and Care Professions Council standards of proficiency

4.3.1 To be actively involved in the department audit and quality assurance programme.

4.3.2 To have a good understanding of research terminology and practices

4.3.3 To maintain a good awareness and application of research informed practice

4.4.1 To participate in the departmental out of hours rotation including weekend, evening and night shifts. Including the agenda for change 7 day working week within the department and take part in this shift system.

4.4.2 To rotate through the modalities offered on site as the department requires.

4.4.3 To observe the IRR 2017 and IR (ME) R 2017 regulations along with other relevant legislation, codes of conduct and local rules relating to imaging modalities.

4.4.4 To be aware of and adhere to Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies.

Qualifications

Essential

• BSc(Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent (E)
• Health and Care Professions Council Registration (E)
• Evidence of career-long commitment to CPD (E)
• Student Clinical Assessors Course (D)
• College of Radiographers or equivalent accredited IV cannulation course (E)
• Postgraduate study in a relevant area (D)
• Understanding of factors affecting service throughput and quality
• Completion of preceptorship (E)
• PgC/PgD or MSc in relevant clinical modality (D)

Experience

Essential

• Up to date knowledge of relevant modality imaging techniques (E)
• Awareness of clinical governance issues in relation to patient care (E)
• Experience of working unsupervised (E)
• Experience of, and proactiveness in, training staff and students (E)
• Experience of working within the NHS (E)
• Significant Post-graduate experience commesurate with grade/role (E)
• Experience in modalities other than X-ray & Fluoroscopy (D)
• Previous experience as Band 5 radiographer (E)
• Experience of on-call and out-of-hours roster (E)
