Job summary

Post-FRCS applicants are invited to apply for a Senior Fellow in Complex Robotic Knee Surgery post in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department at St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals from October 2025 for 12 months.

The fellowship provides solid grounding in primary knee arthroplasty, experience in robotic knee surgery both partial and total knee arthroplasty, as well as exposure to complex revision surgery. There is also scope for training in other aspects of knee surgery including soft tissue reconstruction and arthroscopy.

The Major Trauma Centre at St Mary's provides a huge opportunity to gain experience in the management of and surgery related to, high volume major trauma and polytrauma. The elective centre at Charing Cross has been designated as the regional Major Revision Centre. The successful candidates will join a young and vibrant department, with additional opportunities to conduct research, take part in leadership and audit programmes and help organisation of middle grade work.

There are weekly dedicated trauma lists and regular elective surgery lists. The post is mainly at Charing Cross Hospital under the supervision of Mr Dinesh Nathwani. There will be an opportunity to attend surgeries at the NWL Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Central Middlesex hospital as well as Cleveland Clinic Hospital with Mr Nathwani.

We are looking for a fellow who can start in October 2025. Please clarify earliest start date on your application.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will divide his/her time between outpatient clinics, inpatient cover and elective operating lists. Operating lists include both independent and supervised trauma theatre cover at Charing Cross Hospital. There will be a degree of flexibility to accommodate the successful candidate's preferences and interest. The postholder will mainly gain experience using the CORI Robotic system. There will be an expectation to perform research activities within the field of Robotic Orthopaedics and the postholder will have access to the engineering team at the Hamlyn Centre of Robotics at Imperial College to collaborate on appropriate studies. The postholder will also have an opportunity to complete a Diploma in Robot Assisted Systems and collaborate on research projects with other robotic fellows internationally. The postholder will be expected to publish at least two articles or chapters in peer reviewed journals and plenty of opportunity and time exists for successful completion of these projects.
