Job summary

The post is for an individual with a research focus and experience in Medical Retina. It consists of 9 fixed sessions of which 7 are within ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmology Research Group) Clinical Research Facility located at the Western Eye Hospital and 2 within the Medical Retinal Service in Ophthalmology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The applicant could be employed to work at The Western Eye Hospital, Marylebone Road, London NW1 5YE or Charing Cross Hospital, Fulham Palace Road, London W6.

The ICORG portion of the post (7) is funded from grants received by ICORG and is suitable for a medically qualified ophthalmologist with an interest in clinical research, and the opportunities associated with working in an ophthalmic clinical research facility.

The Medical Retina Fellow portion of the post (2) is funded through an initiative to increase capacity of healthcare injectors in the service to meet the increasing demands of the service.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will allocate their time between clinical care and research activities with a focus on ophthalmology, ensuring high-quality patient care while engaging in innovative research. The distribution of responsibilities is designed to provide flexibility and accommodate the fellow's interests and career goals.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality care to ophthalmology patients in accordance with best practices and clinical standards.
  • Maintain GMC specialist registration and remain medically qualified.
  • Develop and sustain the competencies necessary to perform all duties effectively.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  • Engage patients in shared decision-making regarding their care and respond appropriately to their views and preferences.

Research and Clinical Trials

  • Design and execute a personal clinical research project in collaboration with the principal supervisor.
  • Recruit participants for ICORG clinical trials and assess patients involved in these trials as agreed with the principal supervisor.
  • Manage clinical appointments for trial patients, conduct comprehensive ophthalmic examinations (e.g., slit lamp examination, VA/BCVA, GAT, gonioscopy, OCT, OCTA, and other imaging), and ensure accurate data entry into trial databases.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at other institutions on original research tasks, as directed by the principal supervisor.

Clinical Research Project Management

  • Lead multiple clinical research projects aligned with ICORG's objectives, focusing on innovative biomarkers in glaucoma and AMD (e.g., DARC).
  • Responsibilities include protocol development, Ethics and R&D applications, statistical methodologies, and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical research protocols, data management standards, and participant care quality.
  • Participate in project feasibility assessments, grant writing, and the preparation of research documents.
