Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable doctor to join our Acute Medicine team at St Mary's Hospital (SMH), Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as a Locum SHO (Trust Grade Doctor).
This post is a daytime role, working from 09:00-17:00, with the possibility of on-call duties depending on service needs and the post holder's experience.
The position is suitable for a doctor with at least one year of clinical experience and prior NHS experience. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the dynamic field of Acute Medicine and work closely with a multidisciplinary team.
The role is of a FY2, IMT 1 or 2 level trainee in Acute Medicine. The post holder will be expected to work across the General Internal Medicine wards. They will have the opportunity to be on the take rota and clerk sick patients, as well as be on the cardiac arrest team. There is a strong consultant presence with a daily consultant led presence and onsite consultant cover.
To be eligible for this role candidates should possess GMC registration with a license to practice. This is a full-time post advertised for an initial 6-month period (February to August 2025), with the possibility of extension to 12 months depending on service needs.
The Trust is committed to equal opportunities and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds. Flexible working arrangements can be discussed at the interview stage.
Main duties of the job
The Acute Medicine service at St Mary's Hospital provides a consultant led service for all patients admitted under Acute Medicine 24 hours, 7 days per week. There are two inpatient wards co-located on the first floor of the main hospital building with 39 beds between them. These are the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) 1-17, AMU 18-35 and there are 4 acute side rooms.
The Acute Medicine service at St Mary's Hospital works closely with the Emergency Department and with other Specialty Medicine services. The Acute Medicine service has a fast turnover of patients; our usual length of stay is around 1.5 days. This is due to a consultant led service with twice-daily consultant input into patient care, great support from imaging and diagnostics, multidisciplinary approach to patient care (delivered by the Frailty team) and an excellent pharmacy team across Acute Medicine. In addition, there is daily input from consultant lead specialties such as gastroenterology, respiratory, infectious diseases, endocrinology, psychiatry, etc. for patients who require specialist input. The appointment to this post will bolster the Acute Medicine service provision to continue delivering safe and timely care to medical patients requiring admission.
Although the appointee to this post will work mainly in the Acute Medicine service, their appointment will also allow for the development of expanded same day emergency care pathways within the urgent and emergency care directorate.
