The Gastroenterology service at Imperial College NHS Trust is advertising for 8 months Maternity cover post- full-time Consultant in Luminal Gastroenterology with an interest in Hepatobiliary Endoscopy - Hammersmith Hospital.
The Gastroenterology Department aims to provide a comprehensive service for patients with gastroenterological problems whilst being fully committed to developing, teaching, training, and research at all levels. The Department is closely integrated with the Hepatology team at St Mary's Hospital and the Pancreatic/Biliary Medicine team at the Hammersmith. Services are provided for patients from diverse social, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and a wide geographical area.
The Gastroenterology service has close links to the upper gastrointestinal surgery and HPB surgery, which are based at the Hammersmith Hospital, and the lower gastrointestinal surgery department at Charing Cross Hospital. It is extremely well supported by the Histopathology and Radiology departments. There are also close links with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Bariatric Service.
The endoscopy units at ICHT provide extensive diagnostic and therapeutic interventional services. Hammersmith and St Mary's endoscopy units are JAG accredited. The post may involve the provision of endoscopy on any of the three sites. Endoscopy services include upper and lower GI endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, ERCP, EUS, and luminal stenting.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with other members of the team to ensure high quality acute and general medical and gastroenterology services within the strategic framework agreed by the team. They will work closely with the appropriate clinical management teams.
Ward responsibilities, and acute take responsibilities, will be as described in section 2.2 above.
The postholder will undertake 5 endoscopy lists / outpatient clinics per week.
There will be a commitment to the out-of-hours endoscopy service.
Provide High Quality Care to Patients in Acute & Specialist Medicine
The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
The post holder must be JAG accredited in EUS and ERCP.
The post holder must maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post.
The post holder must ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
The post holder must ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
The Trust supports the requirements of CPD as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The job plan includes 1 PA for Continual Professional Development.

- Acute GI Bleeding on call
The on-call consultant covers all three sites for Upper GI Bleeding supported by two SpRs and an on-call endoscopy nurse. The expected on-call intensity will be 1 in 12 and will be remunerated as a PA allowance and an on-call supplement. Emergency procedures occurring out of hours take place in theatres or in High Dependency areas with anesthetics support. The post holder will join this rota, though this may be reviewed.
