Job summary

Imperial College Heathcare NHS Trust (ICHT) welcomes applications for this full-time locum consultant radiologist post. We are looking for a general radiologist with a special interest in breast imaging.

The successful candidate will have completed formal training in general radiology, and higher sub-specialist training in breast radiology. Applicants must hold their CCT in Radiology, be on the GMC Speciality Register or be within 6 months of being granted a CCT.

The post has arisen due to an extension of existing services and new service demands. The appointment offers an opportunity to strengthen the established general radiology and breast radiology teams. The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring the department provides the local population with a high quality and accessible service and achieves the national cancer wait targets for breast patients.

Imperial is the Lead Provider for NW London radiology and has one of the largest breast units in the country, comprising radiology (both screening and symptomatic) and surgery. The symptomatic service has approximately 21,000 outpatient spells a year and operates on 900 cases a year. The West of London Breast Screening Service screens approximately 50,000 women per year.

Main duties of the job

The Trust is looking to appoint a locum Consultant General Radiologist with a specialist interest in Breast Imaging. The post-holder will play a key role in ensuring the department provides the local population with a high quality and accessible breast service, and achieves the national cancer wait targets for breast patients.

The department is based at Charing Cross Hospital and this is where most activity takes place. A small number of outpatient clinics are run at St Mary's Hospital. The department provides a broad range of services including daily rapid diagnostic clinics, a comprehensive surgical service which offers the full range of reconstructive options, and a well-established family history clinic. It is an essential service for patients referred from local primary care services as well as the Trust-hosted West of London Breast Screening Service. The post-holder will work across our services and sites.

The department has a strong and growing research portfolio. Current projects include the flagship Aims studies that are a collaboration with Lord Darzi and Google. The studies are investigating the use of artificial intelligence to improve the quality, efficiency and experience of breast cancer screening. Whilst there is no planned research PA allocation in the job plan, the post-holder will be expected to actively support all research projects that the department participates in.
