Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for a locum consultant to support the A&E and cataract service

This post is based in the Ophthalmology directorate across Charing cross and Western Eye Hospital sites and the post holder will work with current body of ophthalmology consultants. The department is very busy, seeing over 50,000 patients across A&E, emergency clinics and cataract clinics.

The service offers high quality treatment for cataracts as well as emergency care and the successful post holder will also oversee the training of ophthalmology trainees who are suitable to be assigned to support these sessions.

There is a very active research unit: ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmic Group) which is a part of Imperial College's department of Cancer and Surgery and the team are actively participating in a number of phase 1 to phase 4 trials including surgical trials. The successful candidate will provide outpatient clinics, a regular theatre list and will have a regular ED session and emergency clinics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across ophthalmology services.

Main duties for the role will be:

  • Outpatient clinics incataract
  • Theatre sessions in high volume cataract theatre
  • Take part in consultant on call rota
  • Emergency department sessions

The WEH ophthalmic emergency department sees approximately 150 patients per day with inpatient care available for those patients who need admission. The department is staffed with North West London Deanery junior and senior trainees, staff grades, associate specialists and nurse practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor all members of the team. The department is also supported by an on-call consultant from the North West London hospitals rota and access to all ophthalmic sub specialty expertise is assured.

Essential

  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • FRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification

Further training & knowledge

Essential

  • Be near to OR completed Higher specialist training in ophthalmology
  • Demonstrable experience of managing patients with cataracts and ED presentations
  • High proficiency in cataract surgery of wide complexity
  • Highly proficient at cataract surgery, managing vitreous loss and training in intra ocular surgery
  • IT Skills and computer literacy

Management skills

Essential

  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Management of staff
