Job summary
We seek to recruit a locum functional surgery movement disorder neurology consultant to allow for the expansion of the MRgFUS (MRI guided Brain Focused Ultrasound) and DBS (deep brain stimulation) service. The service was commissioned and funding given for a consultant post, however as the service was new, a dedicated clinical fellow post was created to support the Neurology specialist consultant for this new pathway. It allowed for training and development for future specialists in this field. This was agreed through the MRgFUS steering group.
Strategically this locum consultant post is required to create a parallel independent practice and succession for the existing single-handed consultant neurologist specialising in this area of movement disorder, who is now part time and of retirement age. MRgFUS in particular, is still a relatively new treatment approach and currently ICHNT is one of only two centres nationally commissioned by NHSE to provide this pathway, which is the other key driver for this post.
Main duties of the job
The 10 PA consultant post will provide the below new weekly activity
- 1 MRgFUS procedure.
- 4 OP clinics totalling 245 news and 350 f/ups (over 350 f/ups (over 35 weeks)
This post therefore supports the doubling of MRgFUS procedures every week via an extra procedure session, which meets and exceeds current NHSE commissioning expectations, and aims to carry out approximately 75 to 100 procedures p.a. The services already have plans to increase this figure by working towards a model of two MRgFUS procedures in one day in future.
The formal job plan is yet to be finalised but the current draft is as follows:
Consultant Functional Surgery Movement Disorders Neurologist (10 PAs)
1 x MRgFUS procedure 2.0 DCC
2 x MRgFUS clinics (1 pre-op and 1 follow up) 2.0 DCC
1 x General Neurology Clinic 1.0 DCC
1 x tremor Clinic 1.0 DCC
1 x tremor surgery (on table assessment) and programming 1.0 DCC
Administration 1.0 DCC
MDTs (alternate week MRgFUS and DBS) 0.5 DCC
Core SPA 1.0 SPA
Additional SPA (TBC) 0.5 SPA
Total 10.0 PAs
On call is category B, low frequency, attracting a 1% supplement.
