Job summary
The Imperial Stroke Centre is an accredited comprehensive stroke service, which is one of the leading and largest stroke services in the UK, consisting of a 23-bedded Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and a 22-bedded Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) for early stroke rehabilitation. The Imperial Stroke Centre offers consultant led 24/7 thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
Applicants from the UK are welcomed from different base specialties including neurology, general internal medicine and geriatric medicine, rehabilitation medicine and acute medicine.International applicants with equivalent relevant specialty training and PLAB certification are very welcome to apply.
Successful applicants will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of stroke care, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy for acute stroke, neuro radiological and neurovascular aspects of stroke, as well as training in TIA, stroke rehabilitation, and stroke prevention in the outpatient setting. Trainees will benefit from a weekly consultant-delivered teaching programme dedicated to covering the Stroke Sub-Specialty Curriculum. Applicants will participate actively in international multicentre clinical trials, academic and teaching rota, local clinical governance projects, and managerial aspects of service development. On call duties will remain wholly within the stroke service. Six stroke registrars provide thrombolysis, thrombectomy, hyper-acute and acute stroke unit cover, TIA and stroke clinic cover.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates in conjunction with their colleagues will be expected to :
- Review all acute stroke patients admitted to A&E. These assessments will be aided by a junior stroke senior house officer and a specialist stroke nurse.
- Respond immediately for all potential candidates for thrombolysis and thrombectomy, and to participate in all clinical and governance meetings related to this service.
- review new HASU admissions and do morning and evening ward rounds, as well as 3-times a day board
- Provide medical support to the ASU and review patients in ITU and other out-lying wards who have been referred to HASU.
- Attend academic meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, stroke consensus grand rounds, neuroradiology and neurovascular MDT meetings, and to participate in all the educational opportunities relevant to stroke trainees.
- Participate in a thrombolysis/thrombectomy out of hours on-call rota. All final decisions for stroke intervention are made by the on-call stroke consultant, who is on-site from 9am to 8pm (and off-site thereafter), 7 days a week.
- Fellows will be encouraged to spend one session per week on stroke audit and research.
- Teaching junior medical staff and medical students.
- Fellows will be expected to participate in administrative tasks, service development and clinical governance.
