SAU is an assessment unit with a high turnover of patients. SAU streams predominantly acute admissions from A&E, with additional pathways for the assessment of general surgery patients referred from primary care, urgent care centres, clinics, and follow up from acute admissions. There are additional ambulatory pathways managed through SAU eg Vascular angiogram and venogram pathways which allow patients to be admitted via SAU for diagnostic vascular admissions and prevent acute surgical beds being occupied by patients having these diagnostic procedures.
