Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated senior trainee (ST4 or above or equivalent) with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement to join Imperial College Healthcare as a chief registrar on the RCP Chief Registrar Programme.

The medical chief registrar will be attached to the Division of Medicine and Integrated Care (MIC) which operates Trust-wide, and the acute medicine team at St Mary's Hospital - contributing to the medical take, care of medical inpatients and same day emergency care (SDEC).

The chief registrar will have 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Projects will be tri-site within MIC and may also extend to other divisions. Projects may include service improvement, engagement and morale, workforce wellbeing, and sustainability.

Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, which runs from September 2023 to June 2024 and comprises five 2-day modules that chief registrars are expected to attend.

Main duties of the job

This post is 60% clinical within the department of acute medicine at St Mary's and 40% managerial within the division of medicine.

The medical division chief registrar will work with the divisional director of medicine and the head of operations for the medical division on a number of projects. These will include:

  • Providing a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale
  • Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and improve morale
  • Service improvement projects to improve patient flow and safety within acute medicine
  • Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation, and producing periodic progress reports

The chief registrar will also attend departmental and divisional management meetings to gain an understanding of management and the wider social, political and economic influence health care delivery.

The postholder will be supported by a designated consultant who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual. The postholder will be expected to attend divisional and executive meetings. The postholder will be expected to maintain a learning portfolio reflecting upon their progress through the Fellowship. The portfolio will inform regular tutorials with the consultant.

Hot-desk space and computer access is provided, with web access, PubMed access and medical journals via Imperial College London library services.

NB No study leave funding is attached but a bursary may be available to assist with postgraduate study.

In the clinical role, the post-holder will look after acute medical inpatients and take part in the acute medical on call rota. They will work with a team of junior doctors and wider multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of consultant physicians.

There will be opportunities for additional experience/training in Ambulatory Emergency Care/Same Day Emergency Care, and specialty clinics according to the postholders interests.

The post is ideal for trainees in a speciality training programme who are keen to develop their leadership skills whilst continuing to develop their medical skills.

The duration of the post would be 1 year initially, with the possibility of extending.

The clinical aspects of the post are based on the acute medical wards at St Marys Hospital. The post involves responsibility for inpatients under the care of the acute and elderly medicine firm (Firm V, with responsibility only for acute medicine patients) under the direction of a consultant physician with a junior team to manage.

There is a weekly morning report in which trainees from all medical specialities present interesting cases on a rotational basis and a weekly radiology meeting. There is a monthly Local Faculty Group (LFG). There are weekly hospital Grand Rounds during academic term times.
