Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the ENT Otolaryngology department at Imperial. The successful applicant will be expected to have excellent experience within general and subspecialty Otolaryngology Surgery. To complement our existing consultant team we are looking for consultants who have particular experience within Laryngology. The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly and to bring new skills to the department.

The post holder will work as part of the ENT team to provide a high quality ENT service that aims to provide excellent patient care. This includes delivery of out-patient, emergency, day-case and inpatient services independently.

The National Centre for Adult Airway Reconstruction is run by Prof Guri Sandhu and Mr Chadwan Al Yaghchi, supported by 2 doctoral speech and language therapists, 2 airway clinical nurse specialists, MDT co-ordinator and clinical psychologist.

The service primarily cares for patients with Airway Stenosis a chronic condition in which patients' airways contract over time which without intervention would lead to asphyxiation. The most common cause of Airway Stenosis is laryngeal damage from prolonged ITU stays. Over half of all referrals come from outside London, we are looking to expand the unit whereby both the surgeon and anaesthetist are national experts in managing these complex patients. There is a significant cohort of patients who have surgery multiple times per year to repair and expand their airway.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the team delivering the National Centre for Adult Airway Reconstruction.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • To enhance and complement the skill mix and services provided by the Laryngology/Airway service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
  • To advance the office-based laryngology service
  • To advance the voice service across sites working in collaboration with SLT team developing new pathways and models of care.
  • To provide high quality care to all ENT patients
  • To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  • To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care activities.
  • To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
  • To take an active role in managing patient pathways in their respective area.
  • To undertake administrative duties associated with their patients in line with departmental guidelines.
  • To support with the training of junior specialist trainees and other junior doctors in the ENT surgery department.
  • To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Imperial College as required
  • Adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
