Job summary

The Hotel Services team at Imperial College Healthcare are looking for motivated and committed professionals to join our expanding team. Previous experience in a similar high-profile setting is preferred but not essential. The chosen candidate must have good communication skills, able to work as part of a team as well as work on their own initiative and able to demonstrate high level of customer service. The right candidate must be able to work to NHS working practices and agreed standards. A keen eye for details and a positive attitude are key requirements.

The role will entail all aspects of the portering services. The ideal applicant will be required to use a proactive approach in identifying and solving problems before they arise by liaising with the clinical team & management. The successful candidate will undertake development training to make sure the services provided are to Trust and IPH standards.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure all work undertaken is in line with health, safety, security and Trust policies and procedures
  • To provide a high-quality portering service to patients, staff and visitors demonstrating high standards of customer service at all times.
  • Collection and delivery of patients, furniture, air and foam mattresses, linen, medical gases, medical records, x-rays, pharmacy boxes, specimens, blood products, post, clinical and non-clinical waste, mortuary, medical equipment and supplies, food and any other items, using appropriate methods of work as directed.
  • The post holder must demonstrate excellent communication skills and have a good knowledge of health & safety. All work must be undertaken in line with Trust health, safety, and security policies and procedures including infection control. When required, you may need to assist with the emergency and evacuation procedures and security situations in accordance with Trust policy

Job description

Job responsibilities

General Portering

To ensure a friendly, efficient and courteous service is provided to both internal and external customers demonstrating high standards of customer service at all times.

Undertake necessary duties to ensure maintenance of an efficient Portering Service as directed by your Team Leader. These duties will be carried out both in patient and non-patient environments.

To assist with the collection and delivery of equipment around the site and assist with furniture moves as appropriate

Attend medical emergencies including cardiac arrests with the rhesus trolley / bag

Ensure correct and appropriate use of radio and other communication equipment at all times in compliance with local guidelines and procedures

In the event of any fire / major accident or incident, man key entrances, check ID badges, assist patients able to walk and assist nursing team with patients unable to walk

Ensure the safe storage and maintenance of appropriate stock, medical gases and supplies, specifically adhering to health and safety regulations around type and size, and ensure that these are available as required within the designated area

Change medical gas cylinders on wards, in departments, and the manifold room, using appropriate methods of work, following appropriate training

Safely transfer Liquid Nitrogen through the designated hospital route

Patient Transfers

To transfer patients in and around the hospital site in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, trolley, or beds

Assisting patients to be pat slid across from trolleys to the bed with assistance from the nursing staff

To undertake mortuary duties as required including collection and delivery of deceased patients to the mortuary using appropriate means of transport and where required, prepare bodies for viewing.

Specimens and blood

To undertake specimen collections and deliveries

Providing a certificate of competence has been obtained, use the designated biometric blood tracking system ensuring the blood products are transported in the correct manner e.g. use of cool box for 2 units or more

Waste

Collection and safe removal and, where appropriate, the recording of non-clinical and clinical waste within your area of work, in and around the hospital sites as instructed by the helpdesk and in line with Trust policy

Assist in running an effective waste recycling and waste minimisation system, including shredding when required

Ensure the cleanliness of the Recycling area at all times

Driving duties

Where driving duties are required these must be in accordance with on-site restrictions, speed and statutory regulations.

Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and safe before, during and after use, and complete relevant documentation within the prescribed frequencies.

Ensure vehicles are kept clean and tidy and are cleaned inside and out

Report any vehicle defects or concerns immediately

Post and post room

Where required, frank mail in line with postal service guidelines and Trust policies and procedures

Other duties

Liaise and communicate with the Helpdesk dispatch unit maintaining professionalism at all times

To have a flexible approach to working with new innovations and technologies to aid and enhance service delivery

Ensure wheelchairs and trolleys are kept clean and ensure safe practice to minimise the risks of infection to patients and staff in accordance with national and Trust policy, in particular to be aware of responsibilities as listed in the Infection Control Policy

Ensure that all equipment is clean and fit for purpose

Ensure the cleanliness of the Porters lodge at all times

Maintain a clean, neat and tidy appearance, complying with Trust uniform and hand care guidelines and high standards of personal hygiene

Be dressed in the correct uniform at all times including the wearing of name badges and Trust

identity cards ensuring that both are clearly visible at all times.

Report immediately to your line manager and/or other appropriate person any faults or defects to Trust or Company equipment or premises, especially those which could be dangerous.

Report any accidents or near misses to the appropriate manager and complete the appropriate incident/accident report forms.

Use all mechanical and electrical equipment in a correct and safe manner, using appropriate methods of work, following training

Ensure confidentiality, privacy and dignity is maintained at all times in accordance with the Data Protection Act and in line with Trust policy, where appropriate

Ensure the welfare and safety of children within their care. This includes staff who come into contact with children and families in the course of their work as well as those staff who have a specific role with children and families.

Ensure attendance at Child Protection training at the appropriate level within the specified time frame.

Staff must comply with Safeguarding Policies and Procedures in order to promote safeguarding and prevent abuse to vulnerable people using Trust services.
