Job summary

IMT3 doctors are based on the respiratory ward or the acute medical unit. They are often involved in respiratory inpatient referrals under the supervision of more senior registrars and/or Consultants. There will be the opportunity to learn about non-invasive respiratory support, including CPAP, BiPAP and HFNO and to sit in and see patients in Respiratory clinics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to work in a MDT environment to deliver high-quality medical care to patients on the ward.

The Respiratory ward (Manvers) has an Acute Respiratory Unit with two 4 bedded bays where patients can receive CPAP, BiPAP and HFNO. The rest of the ward takes primarily respiratory and general medical admissions, with 8 beds being looked after by the Endocrinology team.

The acute medical wards (Emergency Medical Admission (EMA), Emergency Medical Short Stay (EMSS) and Douglas Side Rooms) consist of 40 beds in total which are divided amongst the five medical firms (Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endocrinology, and Firm V).

About us

There are two inpatient Respiratory teams, together forming one of five medical firms who participate in the acute medical take and manage admitted patients. Each team is staffed from a pool of 3 SpRs and 1 IMT3; 4 SHO grade doctors (2 FY2, 2 IMT) and 4 FY1s. Staffing varies according to annual leave, study leave and on call commitments but each team will have a minimum of 1 SpR grade and two other staff members at all times.

Both teams manage patients with acute and chronic respiratory disease along with patients with general medical problems. Team A takes responsibility for inpatients on the respiratory ward (Manvers), which will include patients with COPD, asthma, lung cancer, respiratory failure, interstitial lung disease and other general medical conditions. Team B is responsible for the acute take and the care of patients admitted to the medical assessment unit on the acute take, until they go home or to an appropriate ward,

The weekly timetable differs slightly according to the team the trainee is assigned to. It is usual to rotate between A and B teams on a bi weekly basis.

There are 13 Respiratory Consultants who undertake inpatient work on a rotational basis. T. There are close links with the infectious diseases, HIV and intensive care teams, and with the radiology, microbiology, histopathology and cytology departments.
