Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for a locum Consultant to support the paediatric, adult motility and Emergency services. The role is offered with a view to progression to a permanent post.

The post holder will work with the current body of ophthalmology consultants at WEH and CXH in the ophthalmology directorate of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The department is very busy, seeing over 5000 outpatients a month, and provides a tertiary referral service for West London. The service offers high quality paediatric and motility, as well as emergency care and the successful post holder will also oversee the training of senior ophthalmology trainees who are suitable to be assigned to support these sessions.

There is a very active research unit: ICORG (Imperial College Ophthalmic Group) which is a part of Imperial College's department of Cancer and Surgery and the team are actively participating in a number of phase 1 to phase 4 trials including surgical trials. The successful candidate will provide glaucoma clinics, a regular theatre list and will have a regular ED session.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across adult and paediatric ophthalmology services.

Main duties for the role will be:

  • Outpatient clinics across paediatric, adult neuro- ophthalmology and Motility
  • Theatre sessions to include paediatrics and strabismus surgery
  • Take part in rota for Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening
  • Emergency department sessions

The WEH ophthalmic emergency department sees approximately 150 patients per day with inpatient care available for those patients who need admission. The department is staffed with North West London Deanery junior and senior trainees, staff grades, associate specialists and nurse practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to train and mentor all members of the team. The department is also supported by an on-call consultant from the North West London hospitals rota and access to all ophthalmic sub specialty expertise is assured.

Essential

  • On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC's Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • MBBS
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • GMC full registration

  • Specialist training (fellowship) in - Paediatrics/Motility
  • Capable of dealing with general ophthalmic emergencies
