Job summary

This is a really exciting time to join our team. We have fantastic opportunities for dedicated and experienced neonatal nurses who are looking to broaden their clinical experience and develop their careers.

Our Neonatal service is the largest neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) service within North West London.

As the pioneering UK-wide centre for therapeutic hypothermia neonates we treat more than 1000 babies per year from all over the country at risk from irreversible brain injury.

Our neonatal unit provides care to high risk, critically ill neonates,withintegrating the family into care one of our guiding principles. Our NICU service has recently launched an integrated family-centred care project (based on a model from Toronto Children's Hospital) which supports parents in becoming equal members of the neonatal team and participating in providing active care for their baby with the help of competency-based training.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage the provision of the Neonatal nursing services and provide professional nursing leadership in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at QCCH. Ensuring care is individualised and of the highest quality.
  • Work across two sites (SMH & QCCH) with the Head of Children's Nursing, Lead Nurses, Paediatric inpatient and outpatient areas, Service Manager and General Manager to implement a Children's nursing strategy that encompasses St Mary's and Hammersmith Hospital's Paediatric departments.
  • Support the Lead Nurse and Head of Children's nursing, to ensure compliance to the National Service Framework for Children and Young People (2004), which incorporates Safeguarding of Children, in all areas across the Trust where children are treated.
  • Work collaboratively with the Neonatal Team at SMH as Neonatal care is delivered as one Service across two hospital sites for Imperial.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on all matters relating to neonatal intensive
  • Provide a minimum 20% clinical duties of 11.5 hour shifts

Professional and Leadership

  • Provide professional role modelling to lead and inspire the professional development of neonatal intensive care
  • Provide across site working at SMH when required to support at matron level.
  • Provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the clinical setting to provide assistance, advice and support to staff, neonates and their families
  • Ensure that all neonates receive appropriate evidence based nursing care
  • Support and facilitate the development of nursing research
  • Act as a role model and mentor to the nursing team
  • Ensure all new staff and students receive a full orientation to the department

  • Ensure robust systems are in place to ensure the booking of bank and agency staff is appropriate and that reliance on temporary staff is reduced
  • Ensure appropriate ward staffing through the supervision of duty rosters, the awarding of annual and study leave and controlling the use of bank and agency nurses within agreed limits
    • Implement agreed staffing strategies in order to:

  • Ensure all Human Resources Policies and Procedures are followed
