Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Critical Care directorate to appoint a Clinical Scientist

The post holder will be key in leading on the management of essential Critical care kit and drive forward the educational programme within the Technologist team

You'll be joining a well-established leadership team in helping us achieve excellence.

Main duties of the job

Accountable for the day to day management of the Critical Care Services within PACCS including clinical service planning, manpower management and coordination of all Technical Services within Critical Care.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Provides and performs highly complex specialist and advanced clinical and therapeutic procedures within Critical Care, to adult patients from a range of specialities, suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders who present to Critical Care.
  • Has expert knowledge of Critical Care Technology and service provision and co-ordinates all Critical Care Technology Services within PACCS, providing expert advice and guidance to Critical Care Technologists, Consultants, Doctors and Nurses within PACCS and the Evelina Childrens Hospital.
  • Responsible for the allocation and deployment of Critical Care Technologists manpower to provide routine maintenance and complex diagnostics including: Point of Care Devices, Blood Gas Machines and analysis, Cardiac Output studies, Ventilators, Monitoring, Cooling Machines, Incubators, Transport Equipment.
  • Has a keen interest in new technologies and diagnostics and is able to evaluate their potential use and value to the current services offered.
  • Provide expert clinical advice to Doctors, Nurses, Patients and Point of Care Team.
  • Continually monitor and maintain high professional standards of the Critical Care Technology services to patients and to initiate remedial action where necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure services meet challenging healthcare needs.
  • Provide visible high level leadership and support to Critical Care Technology staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature.
  • Initiate, participate, plan and implement policies.
  • Plan, perform, interpret and provide reports on a wide range of physiological investigations to patients of all age groups, without supervision, employing current standard and specialised techniques, taking appropriate action where necessary.

In case of equipment failure, effectively communicate with the manufacturers and service contractors to minimise any interruption of service.
  • Responsible for the procurement and commissioning of specialist, complex and expensive medical equipment.

Managerial/Leadership/Research

  • Responsible for setting the direction of the department and devising the business plans in line with the long term goals of the department.
  • Responsible for planning the skill mix and rotas for the department.
  • Provide operational management and leadership for Critical Care Technologists.
  • Provide line management for Critical Care Technologists, including monitoring of annual leave and sickness absence.
  • Manage the day to day budget, authorised signatory and responsible for effective use of resources.
  • Is a budget signatory for items totalling <£25K
  • Undertake Responsibility for the efficient and effective management of physical resources
  • Undertake responsibility for assessing, implementing and adapting to new clinical techniques and technologies.
  • Undertake responsibility for the planning and organisation of information resources, ensuring effective and administrative patient reporting and data storage. This includes the archival of all relevant investigative data.
  • Provide and maintain statistical information as required for statistical and other management purposes.
  • Formulate the health and safety and quality assurance policies to patients, staff and visitors.
  • Attend Trust, Regional and National meetings relating to issues of Service provision.
  • Work collaboratively with senior managers and clinical colleagues in the formulation of strategic business plans

  • Responsible for recruitment, appointment and retention of all Critical Care Technologists in line with Trust policies and guidelines.

  • Full line management for all technologists within the service.
  • Plan, implement and monitor education and training of Critical Care Technologists and other staff groups in line with mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs, taking remedial action as necessary.
  • Conduct training presentations at national level to large conferences.
  • Undertake appraisal and performance development reviews ensuring that poor competence is subject to remedial action.
  • Ensure that all staff comply with CPD guidelines, professional codes of conduct and evaluate the effect of development on service delivery.
  • Undertake responsibility for the development and implementation of teaching and training programmes at all levels for Critical Care Technology services.
  • Participate in teaching to a broad range of healthcare workers, including medical, nursing and healthcare scientists.

  • Registered Critical Care Technologist or equivalent
  • MSc in relevant science subject or equivalent experience
