Job summary

This is an exciting time to join our team as we are implementing SABR for a full range of clinical sites, continuing the roll out of Raystation with paperless working, and supporting the service to develop new systems of work and foster collaborative working with a strong focus on integrated governance. Treatment planning is mainly from our Charing Cross site where our equipment portfolio, supported by Aria OIS, includes four TrueBeam Linacs; two with ExacTrac and 6DoF couches, Philips Brilliance CT scanner and an Xstrahl unit; our Elekta Flexitron Brachytherapy unit and a newly installed TrueBeam with SGRT and 6DoF couch is based at Hammersmith Hospital in a newly refurbished department.

We actively support professional development and encourage dosimetrist led research and QI projects. We support leadership development with excellent leadership development programmes delivered by the trust and are the first London radiotherapy service to adopt all of its clinical and physics workforce as Macmillan professionals. We also support flexible working arrangements with many of our team already working 4 day weeks or 9 day fortnights. All applicants would be expected to be able to support the working hours of the service and work across sites.

Applicants with less experience may be considered for a post at a lower level.

Main duties of the job

Band 7 Senior Dosimetrists in Treatment Planning show a high degree of specialism and should haveseveral years' experience of planning. They are expected to achieve and maintain an expert level ofskills and knowledge. Their primary task is to design safe and accurate radiation treatment plans thatachieve desirable outcomes and promote high standards of health care for our patients. They shouldwork well as part of a multidisciplinary team operating in a quality driven environment. They mustshow aptitude and enthusiasm to achieve departmental and personal goals

Professional/Clinical responsibilities

  • Ability to learn the skills needed to perform the range of tasks and responsibilities required of a Band 7 dosimetrist in Treatment Planning.
  • Comply with relevant legislation, Trust and departmental policies, procedures and work instructions.
  • Responsible for treatment plans undertaken and signed as correct.
  • Responsible for treatment plans undertaken by other staff, independently checked and signed by oneself as correct.
  • Be aware of own limits in knowledge and experience: In such cases, to responsibly seek advice or assistance from relevant experts.
  • Accurately interpret requirements of treatment prescriptions and treatment plans in order to advise other staff, including Consultant Clinical Oncologists and Clinical Scientists where required.
  • Demonstrate an expert level of knowledge, showing ability to think critically and analyse data.

Management and Supervision of Staff

  • Provide supervision of dosimetrists, student radiographers and other trainees and other staff within Treatment Planning Support and encourage a team approach to problem solving.
  • Deputise for the Superintendent Dosimetrist, if nominated by the Superintendent Dosimetrist or Head of Radiation Physics & Radiobiology.

Service Delivery

  • Meet standards of proficiency as defined by Trust capability guidelines and the registration body.
  • Manage the patient pathway to help achieve compliance with national waiting time guidelines.
  • Implement efficient workload management practices to ensure delays and breaches are minimised.
  • Provide assistance to clinicians as required, making sure they are made aware of information relevant to their case load: Discuss and implement any actions that result, documenting appropriately.
  • Provide expert advice regarding planning, treatment, and verification procedures to ensure the delivery of accurate treatment and optimal outcomes.
  • Liaise with clinicians, health care professionals, and others, maintaining continuity of care and providing a quality service responsive to the needs of individual patients and their carers.
  • Communicate with patients, relatives or carers in a timely fashion to inform them of appointments or delays. Provide relevant information such that patients can make informed choices.
  • Demonstrate high standards of professionalism, sensitivity and empathy when dealing with patients, helping ensure high levels of customer satisfaction

  • BSc or DCR(T) in Therapy Radiography, or equivalent, and registered with HCPC. or Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics, clinical technology, radiography or engineering).
  • Eligible for registration as a Clinical Technologist on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT)

Desirable

  • Post graduate study in related specialist subjects.
  • Management / leadership courses
