Band 7 Advanced Surgical Nurse Practitioner

Job summary

The successful candidate will be required to act as an autonomous practitioner in multiple clinical areas; the wards, emergency departments and surgical assessment units (this role does not include intra-operative or clinic-based opportunities at this moment in time). Education will be on the job and university based. Funding for education will be sort from the Apprenticeship Levy in the main.

In order for candidates to be successfully shortlisted they must a qualified non-medical prescriber.

Summary of daily tasks include:

  • Attending and participating in ward round
  • Arranging urgent scans and interventions
  • Interpretation of results and imaging, amending care plans based on these findings
  • Referring to other specialties
  • Prescribing acute and regular medications independently
  • Discharging patients and arranging follow up care

Depending on the day and which team an ANP is assigned to will lead to small variations in daily tasks and responsibilities.

Band 7 ANP:

  • Candidate possesses extensive general surgery and/or intensive care experience
  • Have demonstrated the ability to successfully complete Masters level courses
  • Have completed Advanced Physical Assessment of the Adult and Non-Medical Prescribing (these must be completed at Level 7)
  • Be willing to complete a full Masters (remaining modules e.g. research module and dissertation)

Interviews will involve a test for non-medical prescribers and a competency-based interview

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be a member of the surgical team and assist the multidisciplinary team in the care of all inpatients by undertaking advanced patient assessment, intervention and treatment for patients.
  • The post holder will work across divisional and professional boundaries, encouraging inter-disciplinary working for the benefit of improved patient outcomes and efficient use of resources. They will demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise, providing specialist advice, education and support to other health care professionals and patients.
  • The post holder will be a non-medical independent prescriber (or working towards) and will take over roles previously undertaken by junior medical staff.
  • The post holder will be working within the Academic Surgical Unit within the Surgery, Cancer and Cardiovascular Division. The general surgery department is divided into the Upper and Lower GI teams. Both teams provide cover for the emergency general surgery and trauma oncalls as well as providing colorectal, oesophagogastric and bariatric surgical services. It is expected that the post holder will be an integral member of the clinical team and be able to interact with doctors, CNS, ward staff and allied health professionals that provide the care for all general surgical patients
