Job summary

The Nurse Specialist is an expert practitioner who, at a senior level, leads on and facilitates the provision of high quality, specialist nursing care to women with endometriosis and fibroids seen within the gynaecology service at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder would be expected to work independently with a defined clinical caseload as part of the endometriosis and fibroid teams.

The post holder will also provide a service for the support of their inpatient gynaecological care, including preparing patients for admission, prompt discharge, post discharge calls and supporting the ward nursing team.

Patients with endometriosis or uterine fibroids are often complex, requiring long term support with managing their symptoms and overall support of their holistic needs.

The Nurse Specialist will provide diagnostics, treatment, support and advice to women and their families attending the Trust, either as an outpatient or inpatient. The post holder will also act as a resource to other professionals working in gynaecology. The role encompasses clinical, consultative, teaching, leadership, research and audit functions.

Main duties of the job

The duties include;

  • Providing a high quality diagnostic and treatment service for women referred to the Endometriosis and Fibroid service.
  • Providing specialist, expert episodes of nursing care based on assessment of physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs and in liaison with the MDT and other relevant health and care agencies.
  • Providing adequate cover for the gynaecology inpatient ward at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust to facilitate high quality patient care and effective flow for endometriosis and fibroid patients.
  • Acting as a resource for women and the clinical and administrative teams by provision of comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training within Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Undertaking (where appropriate), nursing research with published outcomes and updating own knowledge to promote excellence in clinical practice, and the setting of quality standards within the speciality of Endometriosis and fibroids.
  • Contribute to formulating reports and clinical audit of own practice, service and outcomes.
  • Maintain the BSGE database.

Maintain effective referral systems to the team and from the team to other professionals and agencies.

Maintain accurate records, including demographic and health data to facilitate high quality care audit and future research.

Contribute to the development of policies, procedures and guidelines for the management of service users.

Education of patients and staff

To participate in the provision of information to women and their carers regarding their symptoms, treatment and services available.

Develop and implement pre admission education for patients.

Provide education and guidance for patients regarding wellbeing, and lifestyle associated risks for disease, and potential changes in health status.

In collaboration with senior nursing team, provide training and education to the nurses within the Directorate and offer specific skills related to endometriosis, thereby contributing to higher levels of expertise amongst nursing staff.

Participate in training and teaching seminars and programmes within the Directorate and the Trust relating specialist knowledge.

Contribute to the training, education and support of junior doctors in the Trust.

Research and clinical audit

Participate in the development and implementation of evidence based nursing practice for women requiring gynaecological care, including the use and development of protocols to ensure appropriate specialist care is provided.

With the support and collaboration of the senior nursing team, continually evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided against establish research and evidence.

Participate and ensure any information and data required for clinical and organisational audit or statistical analysis for research projects or registers is recorded and collected as appropriate.

Participate in local and/or national research and development initiatives as appropriate.
