Job summary

A Health Care Assistant (HCA) is a member of the health care team who works under the supervision of a registered health or social care professional. A HCA can undertake a range of roles within their overall job and their level of responsibility will be appropriate/ commensurate to the level of knowledge and skills they have acquired.

To participate, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse/ Midwife, in the delivery of patient care to a defined client group, in accordance with the philosophy of care which enables clients to maintain their skills and maximize the potential to achieve independence. Work as part of an effective and caring team.

The post holder works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse/ Midwife. They will work within the boundaries of their existing and developing skills at all times. The post holder is expected to maintain high standards of care, managing their time, tasks and resources effectively.

Main duties of the job

  • Chaperoning and assisting in general and specialist clinics
  • Stock ordering
  • Stock control
  • Stocking clinical rooms
  • Ensuring clinical environment fit for purpose - clean/tidy/stocked
  • Administrative duties - restocking patient information leaflets etc..
  • Patient contact (see specific competencies)
  • Taking and recording accurate blood pressure, temperature, weight and height
  • To prepare Clinic notes and ensure the relevant paperwork is available
  • To check patient details and to update the computer systems as necessary using LastWord

Ensuring clinics are running to time, and ensure patients are made aware of delays if necessary.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To act as a chaperone during patient clinical examination as required.
  • To be competent in monitoring and recording blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, height and oxygen saturations. To report any abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • To test urine samples, recording results and reporting abnormal results to the Registered Nurse.
  • To collect and label specimens for laboratory investigations as required.
  • To be competent or willing to be trained in phlebotomy skills and able to demonstrate an understanding of the patients needs during the procedure.
  • To be competent or willing to be trained in the assisting of minor operations.
  • Recognise when patients are unwell and bring to the attention of the Registered Nurse.
  • To act within the guidelines and procedures of the department and the Trust.
  • To carry out topical treatments under the supervision of an RGN in Day Care. g. Emollients only.
  • To assist in direct patient care for all patients attending outpatient appointments with supervision from the RGN.
  • To gain additional skills required for Dermatology clinics including performing pregnancy testing, taking skin swabs, performing skin scrapings, taking hair samples, taking toe nail clippings and performing simple dressings under the direction of the RGN.
