West Middlesex University Hospital theatres provides an opportunity to develop your anaesthetic, critical care and high dependency skills within a very friendly and supportive environment. The Theatre comprises of eight operating theatres and recovery unit with eight adult bays and three paediatric bays. The units provides a wide range of surgical specialties including; General, Orthopaedic, Dental, Urology, ENT, Gynaecology, Podiatry, Emergency and Trauma. With the support of the practice Development Team, we offer professional development pathways ranging from in house study courses to post graduate education.

The time you spend in both Main Theatres and two Obstetric Theatres will give you excellent opportunities to develop your anaesthetic, scrub and recovery skills and to develop existing knowledge.

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting and deputising to the Theatre/Anaesthetic Coordinator in the management of the clinical area. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in emergency or unforeseen situations.
  • Act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff.
  • Provide specialist clinical advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical are and provide cover for any area specified within your level of competence. I.e. Nurse led discharge, Trust-wide resuscitation attendance; co-ordination of emergency/trauma lists or provides high-dependence care.
  • Take an active role in rostering and rotation of staff in order to enhance their skills.
  • To act as a team leader and ensure the effective and efficient management of the theatre lists.

Patient /Client Care (both direct & indirect)

  • To lead the provision of care in accordance with the Trust Policies reflecting current trends and developments in nursing/anaesthetics, and the NHS.
  • In conjunction with the staff team, to assist in developing and maintaining a Department philosophy and model of care.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, actively seeking evidence based practice, which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of the patient. A holistic approach to caring should be planned that will include the appropriate level of physiological; pathological; spiritual, socio-economical and cultural aspects which influence the care of clients within your specific speciality.
  • Under the supervision of the Theatre/Anaesthetic Co-Ordinator to lead in setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Develop tools to improve the quality of the service and co-ordinate clinical services across the Department.
  • To comply with and participate in the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance within the Department area.
  • In conjunction with the Theatre/Anaesthetic Coordinator provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical and psychological wellbeing of staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is implemented in accordance with the Trust Risk Management policy.
  • Take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Theatre/Anaesthetic Co-Ordinator.
  • In the absence or as delegated by the Theatre/Anaesthetic Co-Ordinator initiate investigations of untoward incidents, accidents, complaints and other relevant information.
  • Monitor the quality of patient care and action audit information to achieve agreed standards under the direction of the Theatre/Anaesthetic Co-Ordinator.
  • Ensure that theatre/nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).
  • Take clinical lead in allocated specialist area of expertise including rotating in all perioperative areas; Anaesthetics, Scrub and Recovery.
  • Ensure through good practice that customer care initiatives are improved and sustained. Act as a resource for advice to patients, relatives/careers and staff.
  • To actively promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff appreciating national strategy requirements

Communication

Provide support mechanism for sharing good practice within the Department and Trust wide. Assist in the programme and provide clinical supervision, as required for all registered nurses/ODPs working in the Department.

  • Delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members and evaluate outcomes in conjunction with the Theatre/Anaesthetic Coordinators.
  • Maintain and promote effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other Wards/Departments, including developing your formal presentation skills.
  • Promote the corporate image of Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to all individuals, groups and organisations both within the Trust and to the community at large.
  • Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, including support staff to promote a cohesive theatre team and the achievement of team objectives.

Human Resources

  • Assist in the management of staff attendance, poor performance, disciplinary and grievance issues in the clinical area.

  • Assist in the recruitment, retention and selection of staff.
  • Carry out 1:1s and PDRs of staff as delegated by the Theatre/Anaesthetic Understand the impact of individual PDPs on the learning needs of the department.

Financial Responsibility

  • Assist the Theatre/ Anaesthetic Coordinator in the effective and efficient use of resources by adhering to the procedures for the use of supplies, the activation of the nurse bank/alteration of nurse duty rotas and ordering or accessing of equipment.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix are scheduled to reflect the workload and meet the needs of the patient.

Policy development

  • Lead on delegated projects relating to local policy development.
  • Under the supervision of the Theatre/Anaesthetic/Recovery Co-ordinator to work on delegated projects relating to local policy development.
