Clinical Provision & Expert Practice

1. Develop a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, making critical decisions independently to assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and manage patients with known or suspected emergency surgical conditions with appropriate supervision and support

1. Development of advanced knowledge and comprehensive assessment skills, including ordering and interpreting of appropriate diagnostic tests

1. Receive and make referrals to specialty teams and primary care

1. To undertake non-medical prescribing in line with the Trusts non-medical prescribing policy.

1. To develop advanced skills and promote the Advanced Clinical Practitioner role within the framework of the departmental policies.

1. Demonstrate a good understanding of human factors in surgical practice and demonstrate how personal behavior can affect junior, peer and senior colleagues and how this can positively or negatively influence patient safety

1. Act as an expert practitioner in the emergency surgical team, demonstrating a consistently high level of expertise

1. Make appropriate autonomous decisions, consulting with senior colleagues where appropriate, regarding clinical and surgical issues using own professional judgement and expertise

1. Continue professional development in line with professional body requirements a develop surgical assistant skills

Clinical Leadership

1. Encourage and promote evidence based practice and critical decision making in the Emergency Surgery Department through role modeling and providing advice for members of the multi-disciplinary Emergency Surgical Department team.

1. Collaborate closely with the Lead Nurse and Consultant Lead for Emergency Surgery Advanced Clinical Practitioners to ensure fulfilment of credentialing requirements, and undertake delegated projects and management responsibilities as required

1. Lead and assist in the collation of data for the service key performance metrics, and work with others to ensure continuous improvement on results.

1. Develop links throughout the Trust through attendance at meetings and maintain communication networks across sites.
2. Contribute to clinical effectiveness thought involvement in audit, risk management and clinical governance.

1. Manage a safe clinical environment within the Health and Safety at Work act.

1. Have knowledge of the role within policies and procedures relating to major incidents

1. Carry out procedures within hospital guidelines and ensure these are adhered to.

1. Manage and maintain resources within the clinical area (equipment and supplies).

1. Manage incidents within hospital policy and procedure.

Education & Research

1. Lead and provide assistance with teaching programmes for learners and qualified staff within the clinical area, liaising with the Professional Development Team and Medical Education Team to promote a continuous learning environment for nursing and medical teams by contributing to the development of knowledge and skill.

1. Deliver practice development in emergency surgical care by liaising with the Professional Development Team and senior clinicians by contributing or leading on policy initiatives to improve patient care

1. Role model correct use of relevant procedures, guidelines and protocols, and promote these within the Emergency Surgery Department

1. Ability to educate, motivate and inspire members of the multi-disciplinary team and teach and support medical staff, nursing staff, trainee Advanced Care Practitioners, students and newly qualified staff within the clinical setting, and contribute to developing the effectiveness of the learning environment

1. Evidence commitment to continuous professional development needs and address these as appropriate, and participate in regular appraisal and clinical supervision.

1. Proactively initiative, lead and participate in audit and research in the Emergency Surgery Department, and in line with the Trust audit programme.

1. Maintain a critical awareness of current research, identify gaps in evidence based care of patients to formulate further research questions and create a culture of research and development, with evaluation of practice.

1. Innovate and implement necessary changes as a result of audit findings and demonstrate willingness and proactive attitude towards sharing, networking and publishing these results
2. Raise the profile of Advanced Practice in the Emergency Surgery Department locally, nationally and internationally visa publications, study days and conference attendance, and attend relevant network and regional meetings on Advanced Practice strategy

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

• RGN/ HCPC Registered professional
• Post registration qualification and/or appropriate clinical experience in Emergency/General Surgery
• MSc in Advanced Practice
• Qualification in Advanced Assessment Skills with evidence of clinical practice
• Registered independent non-medical prescriber
• Teaching qualification

Desirable

• Qualification in at least one accredited emergency care course (eg. ILS/ALS)

Experience

Essential

• Currently working as a senior nurse with emergency surgery experience
• Senior clinical leadership experience
• Significant post registration experience in surgery
• Experience and evidence of developing practice
• Experience of supporting learning in the clinical environment
• Acknowledged expert in their field who is clinically credible
• Experience of participating in clinical audit

Desirable

• Experience of disseminating work through presentation/publication
• Previous experience in a practice development role/ formal teaching experience

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable effective relationships with all staff; the patients and their carers
• Experience and evidence of working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment
• Experience of managing difficult situations and act in a supportive manner, safeguarding team wellbeing and leading debriefs
• Evidence of effective leadership, practice development, expertise and innovation in clinical practice
• Evidence of teaching/facilitation skills
• Ability to critically appraise research literature and apply research findings to practice as appropriate
• Good insight into current health policy developments
• Provision of Care: -Work autonomously, demonstrating critical analysis and decision making skills
