Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist Pain Management Band 7

Part-Time: 22.5 hours per week

The post holder will be expected to provide a psychological to patients of the pain management speciality. The post holder will assist the lead of speciality in the systematic provision of clinical psychology / Counselling Psychology service to adults referred from the Pain Clinical referral system. This will be providing services in a variety of settings namely the outpatient service and the acute ward rounds and reflective group for acute pain staff. Service provision within this scope will involve liaison with more than one team.

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified specialist clinical psychologist service to patients of the Pain Management Service at the Chelsea & Westminster Foundation NHS Trust. At the same time offering advice and consultation on clients' psychological acre to non-psychologists colleagues and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the therapies' team policies and procedures.

Roles and responsibilities

  • The post holder will be expected to provide a psychological to patients of the pain management speciality.   1. To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the pain management service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observation and semi-structured interviews with clients and others involved in the clients care.
  2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a clients pain management issues, based upon appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
  3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals and groups across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
  4. To evaluate and make decisions and treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual or group.
  5. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.
  6. To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the pain management service across all settings and agencies serving this client group.
  7. To undertake risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  8. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.

Training, Teaching and supervision;

  1. To receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior psychologist and where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
  2. To continue to gain wider post-qualification experience of clinical psychology and the amount and nature of such experience to be agreed with the head of speciality.
  3. To develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to provide supervision to other MDT staffs psychological work, as appropriate.
  4. To provide pro0fessional and clinical supervision of an assistant and as appropriate, to contribute to the supervision of individual cases for trainee clinical psychologists.
  5. To contribute to pre- and post- qualification teaching of clinical psychology.
  6. To provide advice, consultation and training to staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.

Management, recruitment, policy and service development;

  1. To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the teams operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.
  2. To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
  3. To manage the workloads of assistants and graduate psychologists, within the framework of the services and the Pain department policies and procedures.
  4. To be involved, as appropriate, in short listing and interviewing assistant/graduate psychologists under the direction of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist.
  5. AS negotiated and within time constraints, the post holder will be expected to attend relevant clinical meetings within and outside the pain management services at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.
  6. The post holder will be expected to attend regular professional meetings of the pain management department and other departmental meetings.

Research & Evaluation;

  1. To utilise, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual, group, dual work and work with wider team members.
  2. To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.
  3. To undertake project management, including complex audit and service evaluation within the pain management team to help develop service provision.
  4. To familiarise themselves with, and to comply with, the Trusts requirements on research and development

  1. The post holder will input and maintain, appropriate computer and manual clinic records and statistical data and provide this to the service manager/head of specialty when necessary.
