Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for an exciting role in our Breast Cancer CNS team for a Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced nurse who is committed to delivering excellent patient care andtakes pride in what they do. The nursewill work within the cancer nursing team to improve and enhance the breast cancer patient journey. As an experienced nurse you will work alongside nursing and medical colleagues in surgery and oncology to facilitate the best experience and care for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer.

A background in breast cancer / oncology or palliative care would be advantageous to the applicant. Excellent communication skills are essential together with an ability to prioritise workload, whilst working as part of a team is also essential.

Main duties of the job

The breast cancer clinical nurse specialist functions within a field of practice that focuses on the needs of the patient and encompasses interaction with others in delivering nursing, health and social care.

The CNS promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource and commitment to nursing research.

The post holder will contribute to the on-going role in the development of the service for patients with breast cancer. This will include developing protocols; setting up; and running a nurse led clinics (face to face/Virtual/telephone) for follow up care which will include advanced assessment skills.

The post holder will be the key professional involved in supporting and counselling a caseload of patients and their families through the entire cancer journey and specifically around the time of the cancer diagnosis and surgery and following cancer specific treatments.

The post holder will also participate in the education of all disciplines of staff working with this patient group and act as an expert resource to other professionals involved in the care of these patients.

The post holder will work to ensure that cancer specific guidelines are adhered to and Department of Health standards are maintained.

  • To provide expert nursing advice to patients with Breast malignancies and their families throughout the course of their illness from diagnosis, assessing their needs and providing information as required.
  • To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.
  • To liaise with all relevant members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and support of individual patients including GPs.
  • To maintain a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for other health care professionals

  • To offer advice and support on pain and symptom control liaising with the Specialist palliative care team, and make appropriate referrals to the chronic pain service.
  • To assess individual patients psychosocial and spiritual needs and refer for appropriate counselling or to other agencies.
