Key responsibilities Expert Clinical Practice/Leadership

1. To provide expert nursing advice to patients with suspected lung cancer over the phone or face to face where necessary.

2. To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.

3. To liaise with all relevant members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and support of individual patients including GPs.

4. To maintain a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for other health care professionals.

5. To facilitate individualised patient care based upon the principles of evidence based practice.

6. To act as a liaison nurse between investigations until patient is diagnosed with cancer or referred back to GP.

7. To hold a variety of nurse led clinics, including the development of written protocols based on national standards, triaging or following up suspected lung cancer patients, arranging investigations, reviewing results, diagnosing and referring back to a medical team as appropriate.

8. To refer patients diagnosed with lung cancer for on-going support.

9. To work in close collaboration with all members of the MDT.

10. To provide professional clinical leadership and expertise to other nursing staff.

11. To work as part of the Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse specialist wider team, rotating responsibilities to ensure cover of the entire patient pathway including post diagnostic care and support.

1. To promote patient/carer independence through the provision of relevant teaching and support.

2. To participate in and organise study days/education programmes.

3. To develop resource and teaching packs for use by patients and/or staff in the clinical and educational setting.

4. To embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of practice, seeking and acting on patient feedback of the triage assessment service.

5. To ensure the provision of appropriate written information is available to patients and staff.

6. To participate in the Trusts on-going educational programmes.

7. To liaise with other organisations, charities and agencies dedicated to lung cancer.

1. To utilise up-to-date research findings in the delivery of patient care and to disseminate this knowledge to all members of the multidisciplinary team.

2. To participate as appropriate in relevant research studies and audit findings and disseminate these findings to clinical practice as appropriate in order to develop best practice.

3. To identify opportunities for nursing research within own specialist area and carry out nursing research appropriate to the speciality.

4. To regularly audit service including eliciting the views of patients, carers and professionals ensuring patient feedback is incorporated into developments in the service.

1. To attend relevant departmental and Directorate and network meetings relating to clinical governance and to contribute to the clinical governance agenda.

Management

1. To liaise with other members of the team to ensure that there is an efficient use of resources (human, financial and time).

2. To ensure that there is a safe and acceptable environment for clients/patient.

3. To act as a patient/staff advocate through the application of ethical, legal and professional knowledge and skills.

4. To influence, support, and contribute to key cancer performance metrics including 2 week wait (2WW) / urgent suspected cancer (USC), Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) and 62-day treatment.

To be flexible with working cross-site across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex Hospital, covering colleagues and service demand as required

7. Undertake other duties as appropriate to the grade at the request of the line manager and / or Trust that may be required from time to time.

8. Participate in annual reviews of the role and JD and modify as required to meet the evolving nature of the post.

7. To provide specialist advice and support related to the purchasing and commissioning of resources/services.

8. To act in an advisory / collaborative role with senior management in issuesrelation to the specialty.

Person Specification

Essential

Essential

• Registered Nurse Qualification
• Experience of working with patients with respiratory disease
• An understanding of NHS, Cancer Strategy and Trust performance targets
• Knowledge/Experience of lung cancer symptoms, lung disease and pathology
• Able and flexible to work cross-site across CW and WM hospitals
• Experience of working with electronic patient records and other IT systems

Desirable

• Masters degree
• Advanced communication skills course or equivalent
• Knowledge of change management theory
• Experience of running Nurse led clinics
