Job summary
The Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner will form part of the paediatric team, providing expert care and management of patients within the Paediatric Department.
The Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner will be expected to uphold the four pillars of Advanced Practice, providing expert, evidence based care for patients, clinical leadership to assist and advise junior staff with decision making, and participate and innovate in education and research during their training

Main duties of the job
The post holder work alongside the paediatric medical team and will be on the Paediatric Medical Junior rota (with weekday, weekend and night shifts). This will include gaining experience covering the paediatric inpatient wards, the paediatric HDU, the ambulatory unit (PACC) and working alongside the paediatric surgical and gastroenterology teams.
While the post holder is, within their sphere of competence, expected to work independently there will be 24/7 onsite senior support and supervision in the form of a Paediatric Specialist Registrar and/or Consultant.
All Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioners will have a paediatric consultant as an educational supervisor, and together with the HON will be supported.

- Utilise advanced clinical skills to assess patients, order and interpret investigations, diagnose, treat, and refer patients with support and supervision from a senior doctor.

Clinical Provision & Expert Practice
- Maintain a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, making critical decisions independently to assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and manage patients presenting to the Emergency Department with appropriate supervision and support.
- Development of advanced knowledge and comprehensive assessment skills, including ordering and interpreting of appropriate diagnostic tests.
- Receive and make referrals to specialty teams and primary care.
- Undertake non-medical prescribing in line with the Trusts non-medical prescribing policy.
- Maintain advanced skills and promote the Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner role within the framework of the departmental policies.
- Work out of hours and weekend shifts as needed to ensure availability of advanced clinical skills and visible clinical leadership in the Paediatric Department.
Clinical Leadership
- Encourage and promote evidence based practice and critical decision making in the Paediatric Department through role modelling and providing advice for members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Collaborate closely with the Service Director for Acute Paediatrics and HON to undertake delegated projects and management responsibilities as required.
- Lead and assist in the collation of data for the service key performance metrics, and work with others to ensure continuous improvement on results.
- Develop links throughout the Trust through attendance at meetings and maintain communication networks across sites.
- Contribute to clinical effectiveness thought involvement in audit, risk management and clinical governance.
- Manage a safe clinical environment within the Health and Safety at Work act.
- Maintain a knowledge of their role within key policies or procedures (e.g. Major Incident)

- Lead and provide assistance with teaching programmes for learners and qualified staff within the clinical area, liaising with the Professional Development Team and Medical Education Team to promote a continuous learning environment for nursing and medical teams by contributing to the development of knowledge and skill.
- Deliver practice development in paediatric care by liaising with the Professional Development Team and senior clinicians by contributing or leading on policy initiatives to improve patient care.
- Role model correct use of relevant procedures, guidelines and protocols, and promote these within the Paediatric Department.
- Ability to educate, motivate and inspire members of the multi-disciplinary team and teach and support medical staff, nursing staff, trainee Advanced Care Practitioners, students and newly qualified staff within the clinical setting, and contribute to developing the effectiveness of the learning environment.
