The Nurse Specialist should be educated to first degree level in a health related subject and have completed appropriate post registration education development within their area of specialist practice.
Main duties of the job
The role of the Macmillan Lung Cancer CNS;
- Receiving/ triaging referrals and arranging diagnostics to facilitate STT pathway
- Providing skilled assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of specialist care within defined guidelines and protocols
- Referring to other disciplines and agencies
- Ordering and interpreting relevant tests and investigations
- Providing expert advice and guidance to nurses/midwives & other disciplines
- Providing specialist training and education to own and other professions
- Setting and monitoring standards of care and treatment
- Participating in audit and research activity
Disseminating good practice
Providing skilled professional leadership.
Ensuring effective communication between all service providers across the care pathway

Job responsibilities
Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and any practitioners he/ she is responsible for in work area. Identifies and assesses risks in work activities, and develops strategies to manage these effectively. Practices within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust procedures.
Develops own skills, taking responsibility for continuing professional development and performance, maintaining own portfolio in accordance with post registration requirements. Works to achieve competencies appropriate to grade. Identifies own development needs in relation to current practice and future plans, setting personal development objectives.
- Establishes local and national networks, linking with other practitioners in specialist area in order to share/ learn from examples of good practice. Works with relevant clinical groups at cancer network level in order to deliver local and national objectives for the specialist area.
- Triage 2ww referrals to enable the smooth running of the straight to test (STT) pathway and communicate plans to patients
- Ensure provision of an expert clinical practitioner role by advising and acting as a source of information for patients with Lung Cancer, carers and healthcare professionals throughout the cancer patient pathway
- Enable full assessment of each individual patients needs at key stages in their care pathway, completion of Holistic needs assessments and rapid communication between sectors at the time of key events (such as informing a GP of a patients diagnosis or of their death within 24 hours of the event)
- Ensure the delivery of high quality care to lung cancer patients by providing specialist advice to all patients diagnosed with lung cancer and mesothelioma, their families and carers before and after diagnosis and an MDT discussion, and during their disease trajectory
- Ensure provision of emotional support and patient education for patients regarding: the impact of diagnostic procedures; impact of treatment and side effects; the disease process; end of life decisions; health promotion; ensuring that patients are assessed, and care is planned, implemented and evaluated based on research findings that support clinical practice;
Ensure patients, their families and other carers are given appropriate oral and written information regarding planned care and disease process.
- Referring to appropriate agencies where additional support is needed. Inform, engage and empower patients.
- Ensure the appointed person would take the lead on inpatient pathways and nurse-led discharge; participate in National Lung Cancer data audits and waiting times targets
- Ensure collaborative working with the MDT by compiling lists of patients to be discussed and deputising for the MDT co-coordinators as well as ensuring that referrals are redirected onto other MDT members of palliative care, community and Macmillan nurses, and any other tumor sites
- Deliver personalised care approach to Lung Cancer patients pathway, by providing key support during assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and immediate post-treatment care, on a sustainable and practical basis
- Ensure appropriate referrals for treatment or to any other disciplines or relevant CNS at another hospital, as well as assessing the social and financial situation and onward referral to appropriate services
- Ensure that clinical audit/research requirement needs, as well as local clinical indicators to measure the quality of nursing care, as well as participation in LUCADA national lung cancer audit, are being delivered to Lung cancer patients
