Job summary
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and self-motivate pharmacy technician to assume the role of medicines information pharmacy technician at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (Chelsea Hospital site).

Main duties of the job
- To provide technical support for the maintenance and development of a safe and efficient Medicines Information Service, including enquiry answering, database searching and maintenance/development of systems.
- Supervises junior rotational staff rotating through Medicines Information.
- Provide NVQ training and assessment for pre-registration pharmacy technicians (PTPT)
- Trains up to obtain the National UKMI Technician Accreditation qualification.

Job responsibilities
1. Leadership
To supervise the PTPT rotating through Medicines Information.
Promote best practice in the field of Medicines Information.
- Ensure delivery of the clinical governance agenda in relation to Medicines Information.
- Be an active member of UKMi (the national MI network), representing C&W in order to share knowledge and experience with other UKMI pharmacists and technicians.
- Motivate and inspire others in order to create and maintain a good working environment and facilitate staff retention.
Work collaboratively with senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management and to participate in the national agenda for pharmacy services in accordance with the agreed objectives.
2. Delivery of Medicines Information service
To deliver a high quality Medicines Information service that meets the needs of all its users, including health care professionals and patients.
To assist in maintaining the minimum resources in the department to provide a safe, effective Medicines Information service in accordance with the national standard for local centres.
To assist in identifying and obtaining resources required to improve sections of the Medicines Information service in line with national and local requirements.
Facilitate the effective use of these Medicine Information resources by all other pharmacy staff and ensure that the Medicine Information needs of the Lead Directorate Pharmacists are met.
To participate in all aspects of the Trusts Medicines Information Service, ensuring that the service complies with National Standards in service delivery and resources.
Facilitate the Trusts Unlicensed Medicinal Products Policy and maintain documentation.
To assist in providing a specialist HIV Medicines Information service to other local Medicine Information centres through use of local expertise in this area.
Demonstrate professional accountability to service users, stakeholders and the profession.
To critically evaluate and interpret all information obtained from all sources and to apply professional judgement, to provide clinically sound, unbiased, up-to-date and evaluated information.
Identify and manage the risks involved with retrieving and assimilating information about medicines for users of the service.
To assist in preparing and maintaining standard operating procedures for the Medicines Information service.
Be aware of and adhere to the Trust Corporate Governance commitments.
To ensure that all enquiries received are dealt with in a timely manner, prioritising them to take into account the clinical need of the patient and deadlines requested by the enquirer.
To assist in developing the Medicines Information Service in line with national strategy, in accordance to the changing needs of the NHS, the requirements of the Trust and taking into account feedback from users of the service.
To apply sound professional judgement to complex legal and ethical issues and dilemmas.
To communicate complex information effectively and articulately with all grades of staff and users of the Medicines Information Service including patients and members of the public, using a variety of communication techniques including verbal, written and electronic.
To ensure that answers to enquiries are provided in the most appropriate format (verbal, written and electronic) and tailored to the needs of the enquirer, the urgency of response and taking into account the enquirers personal circumstances.
To ensure thorough and complete records are maintained of all queries received by the Medicines Information Service.
To fully participate in Regional Medicines Information Service meetings / training days including participation in Regional Medicines Information projects.
To organise internal peer review meetings and user satisfaction surveys on a regular basis and in accordance to the UKMi published guidelines Quality Assurance Programmes for Medicines Information Services.
To provide advice on suspected adverse drug reactions and to encourage reporting via the yellow card scheme if warranted. To provide assistance to complete these reports if necessary.
3. Education and Training
Identify training needs of PTPT and other junior staff in order to undertake the roles required.
Ensure PTPT training needs in Medicines Information are identified and met.
Contribute to training and induction of PTPT as required by the service.
Provide education and training in basic Medicines Information skills to placement students.
To assist the specialist Medicines Information Pharmacist in providing education and training in Medicines Information for any member of pharmacy staff on an ad hoc basis to augment and facilitate their role in providing a general clinical or directorate pharmacy service.
To assist the specialist Medicines Information Pharmacist in evaluating the training provided.
To assist the specialist Medicines Information Pharmacist in providing teaching sessions to the Pharmacy department.
To ensure personal continuing professional development and maintain a record of such activity. To include attendance and to participate in study days and courses as necessary.
To actively seek novel opportunities to meet training needs.
4. Other Duties
- Participate in other areas of clinical pharmacy practice in order to ensure a broad base of pharmaceutical knowledge.
- Be aware of, and apply, relevant legislation such as the H&SAWA, COSHH, Medicines Act, GMP etc.
- At all times practice in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
- Record and present clinical interventions as part of planned projects as appropriate.
