Senior Clinical Fellow in Plastics and Gender Affirmation Surgery

Job summary

CCGS is hosted within the Division of Specialist Care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Chelsea Centre for Gender Surgery offers masculinising lower surgery, feminising lower surgery, and masculinising chest surgery.

As part of the masculinising lower surgery (metoidioplasty or phalloplasty), patients are offered minimally-invasive gynaecological surgery, which includes hysterectomy, adnexectomy and vaginectomy. Procedures offered for lower feminising surgery include vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty.

The team at CCGS comprises of consultant urological, plastic and gynaecological surgeons leading a multidisciplinary team of Nurse Specialists, Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists, Dieticians, Psychologists, Anaesthetists and Endocrinologists. The service is supported by a Deputy General Manager covering Gender Health and patient pathway coordinators, who will be the first point of contact for service users and will provide administrative support to the clinical team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join this national service to help deliver world class surgical care to patients having gender affirming surgery. Candidates must be committed to the delivery of trans-inclusive care and be sensitive to the unique needs of this patient group. The successful candidate will be involved in the preoperative and postoperative care of this patient group, as well as the surgery itself. They will be expected to substantially contribute to the development of the service, and audit/research within the programme.

  • Full Registration with the GMC
  • MBBS/MRCS/IMRCS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • Higher qualifications in Plastic Surgery

  • Recognised skill/ability to lead, decide and operate independently
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need
  • Capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate leadership when appropriate.
  • Experience working in gender surgery
  • Knowledge of the needs of LGBTQI+ service users

  • Experienced in leading impactful change projects and quality improvement programmes

Academic/Research Skills

  • Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management & evidence-based practice
