Job summary

Applications are invited for one 7 PA locum non-resident consultant post to commence in November 2024 at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, a designated level 3 neonatal surgical centre for North West London Operational Delivery Network.

An opportunity has arisen for a 7 PA locum non-resident consultant neonatologist post for a fixed term of 6 months. This is to back fill the daytime clinical commitments of a number of existing senior consultants who are currently undertaking divisional and directorate leadership roles in management, educational and research with a change to their job plans.

This post will suit a post CCT candidate in Neonatology looking to expand and further their Neonatogy experience at consultant level and the management of complex surgical neonates. The post holder will participate in the attending, consults and outpatients clinics. There are potential substantive job opportunities in the department.

Main duties of the job

You will join a team of 15 enthusiastic dedicated talented innovative neonatal consultants who are strongly committed to providing clinical excellence, outstanding postgraduate and undergraduate education and world class research opportunities. You will be provided with opportunities to gain deeper understanding of NHS leadership mechanisms. We are proactive in supporting special interests, professional development and research.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of this service and for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Neonatologist to join an ambitious team to deliver a high quality neonatal intensive care service. A willingness to develop and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary together with an ability to remain calm under pressure.

Applicants must have appropriate training and significant experience in tertiary neonatal medicine. Applicants must hold MBBS/MBChB or an equivalent medical qualification, along with full GMC registration. Candidates should have a CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal medicine) or equivalent experience and be on the GMC's Specialist Register at time of interview.

Chelsea and Westminster has one of the two neonatal intensive care units in the North West London Neonatal Operational Delivery Network, and is the designated unit for neonatal surgery. The neonatal unit is one of the largest in London with 37 cots comprising 12 ITU, 12 HDU and 13 SCBU commissioned cots, with 12 ITU/12 HDU operational capacity. The unit currently looks after approximately 600 babies and has a combined 6,600 ITU/HDU bed days a year. Transitional care is delivered on the postnatal ward. There are 11 NHS consultant neonatologists (including this post), and 4 academics including three Professors of Neonatal Medicine and a Clinical Senior Lecturer.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is the 4th busiest trust in UK with over 11,000 deliveries per year across Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex sites and has some of the lowest perinatal mortality rates across the country. Maternity CQC rating is "good" at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and "outstanding" at West Middlesex Hospital.

The neonatal unit at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has 37 cots including 12 ITU cots, 12 HDU cots and 13 SCBU cots, with physical space for 42 cots.

We have a strong reputation for clinical and academic excellence and commitment to quality improvement, governance and safety. The Services for children & young people were rated good by CQC. The unit has an established enthusiastic friendly highly skilled nursing team and a diverse medical workforce. We have 7 day community neonatal outreach team. There is active provision of neonatal simulation on the unit. We have recently been awarded stage 2 UNICEF BFI accreditations and have an active family integrated care programme. The neonatal unit offers in house therapeutic cooling service for neonatal hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.

We run a range of specialist neonatal clinics including cardiac and neurodevelopmental assessment and perinatal integrated MDT planning and counselling service alongside our surgical and fetal medicine and maternity colleagues, providing a one stop service antenatal through to postnatal. We worked closely with the West London Children's Hospital and the Heart services at Royal Brompton Hospital. Our SCBU at WMH hospital is currently working towards level 2 designation ambitions.
