Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for to join a growing, dynamic and forward thinking Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust. The candidate will join a faculty of 21 consultants working across our 2 Hospitals; Chelsea & Westminster Hospital (CWH) and West Middlesex University Hospital (WMUH)

The strategic vision for the department is for staff to work seamlessly across both sites however, in the first instance this post will be predominantly based at CWH site with the potential for cross site working with clinical sessions at WMUH. The appointed individuals are expected to uphold the Trust values to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care to patients with liver disease.

The appointee must be a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent and would be expected to have completed higher specialist training or equivalent in Gastroenterology. It is highly desirable that the appointee holds a higher medical degree (i.e. MD or PhD).

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register (for Gastroenterology) or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, work under the terms and conditions of the new consultant contract. He/she together with Consultant colleagues will be responsible for the management of patients with gastroenterological diseases in C&W Foundation Trust. The post holder should have a wide experience of Gastroenterology, and the management of GI bleeding. The post holder will be encouraged and supported to continue to develop specialist interests that synchronise with the departmental service.

The post holder will help lead the Upper GI Service (including MDT) at the Chelsea & Westminster hospital. The post will be predominantly be based at the C&W site, but it is envisaged the post holder will work across both sites (C&W and WMUH).

Job description

Job responsibilities

The main duties of the appointees will be:

Inpatient work:

  • Organisation and supervision of medical management of patients with gastrointestinal gastroenterological diseases admitted to the C&W site.
  • Regular consultant-led ward rounds. There is a dedicated team of junior doctors including 4 Specialty Registrars at each of the sites.
  • Referrals: Seeing patients with Gastroenterology related problems on other wards by request; in particular, patients on the surgical wards, acute assessment and critical care units. Attendance at the various MDTs and X-ray meeting will be incorporated depending on the job plan.

Outpatient and endoscopy activity

  • Two outpatient clinics per week (general gastroenterology) and three endoscopy lists/sessions per week. The combination of outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists may be varied according to the requirements of the department and are subject to change.
  • Specialist GI and clinics already exist: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBD transition/ young adult, Pancreatobiliary, Food allergy (RBH); Cystic fibrosis clinic (RBH), Eosinophilic esophagitis and viral Hepatitis.
  • Specialist Hepatology clinics: Viral, NAFLD, Homeless, Cystic Fibrosis (RBH)
  • There are weekly departmental meetings: Consultant clinical meeting, IBD radiology/biologics (alternate weeks Mon lunchtime), Upper GI MDT (C&W Monday am; WMUH Wednesday AM), Lower GI MDT (C&W Tuesday am), Viral Hepatitis MDT (Wednesday lunchtime C&W), Gastro teaching & Journal club (Wednesday morning WMUH); Gastro unit academic meeting (C&W Wednesday lunchtime); GI radiology meeting (C&W Thursday morning; WMUH Wednesday mornings)

On call activity

  • At the CWH site, the appointed candidate will join the GI bleed rota (currently 1:9 rota), covering emergency endoscopy for C&W site, Royal Marsden and Royal Brompton Hospitals.
  • The Gastroenterology team, across both sites, are in the process of developing job plans to support a 7 day GI service with provision of endoscopy and inpatient review at weekends. The post holder will be expected to participate in this 7 day service. It is intended that this will remain within a 10 PA job plan with the current 8 DCC and 2 SPA split of PAs.
