Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Paediatric Dentistry, based within the Chelsea Children's Hospital's existing team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. This post is for 10 PAs/week. All sessions are currently based at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital but this may be changing to also accommodate West Middlesex Hospital.

The successful applicant will join a Consultant led team working within the Dental department to provide treatment to the highest standard. The post-holder will principally have responsibilities to deliver NHS clinics within the department, though also be expected to contribute to continuing education, professional development and audit within the Trust. The post holder will be expected to have a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of Paediatric Dentistry. They should have a specific interest and experience in complex problems and multidisciplinary work.

The post-holder will be expected to participate in continuing dental education meetings and in Clinical Audit and is expected to work within the Trust's Clinical Governance framework.

Main duties of the job

  • To priorities new patient referrals which are received by the department
  • To accept referrals from the Community Dental Service, General Dental Practitioners, the Orthodontic Consultant for treatment and assessment, and from the other professionals in the Craniofacial Unit providing assessment and advice on complex clinical management issues for children with craniofacial disorders and facial trauma. Referrals are also received from other Paediatric Consultants within the hospital as well as other tertiary referrals outside the hospital, particularly from The Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust
  • To provide the full range of treatment for high risk, medically compromised patients and those with special needs who are both mentally, physically and emotionally disabled
  • To provide dental treatment to include advanced restorative treatment for dental anomalies, rampant caries management, treatment of hypodontia, periodontal treatment in children and paediatric minor oral surgery
  • To take radiographs, when a dental nurse with a suitable radiography qualification is unavailable
  • To engage in teaching and peer review with community dentists and GDPs in NW London

The post holder will support the delivery of the NHS Plan, will be expected to attend clinical governance meetings and take part in continual professional development in line with Royal College guidelines and will have the opportunity to work in a large and developing department with enthusiastic colleagues.

Job responsibilities

In terms of SPA time, the post holder will undertake teaching duties in relation to the development of junior clinical staff including both FTN trainees and specialty doctors. Additionally, the post holder will be expected to develop links with community dentists and promote paediatric dentistry within the local community through full participation in the North West London Paediatric Dental Network.

The post holder will represent the C&W Paediatric Dental Department at trust and departmental meetings as required, as well as participating in monthly dental team meetings and assisting with specific projects. The post holder will be expected to take an active interest in research and work with colleagues to promote research and audit activity within Paediatric Dentistry in the sector.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

  • The post holder must adhere to the standards outlined by the GMC for Good Medical Practice.
  • Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  • Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
  • Demonstrate, model and encourage Trust Values at all times to all patients and staff.

Research, Teaching and Training

  • Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as agreed with the Service Lead. To contribute to training and teaching of medical trainees, medical students, other doctors in training and other staff groups.
  • Act as a clinical and educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead to ensure external accreditation of training post.
  • Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research/audit portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
  • Ensure that mandatory training is up to date as per Trust policy.
  • The Trust expects all consultants to participate fully in continuing professional development to ensure that skills and knowledge are updated in line with relevant medical Consultants may apply to the study leave budget for help with associated expenses in line with the terms and conditions of their contract. In addition consultants will be expected to undertake some non-clinical training and development at the discretion of the trust management, for example, Leadership Training.

  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved training programme in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion of training, or equivalent which follows on from the pre-CCST training period, or equivalent.
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent, before commencing consultant post.
  • Eligible for or holding full registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC) On or eligible for entry to the GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Membership of the Paediatric Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeon or equivalent

Desirable
