An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery (ST3+) at the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Pancreatic Surgery Unit is one of the busiest in the UK performing 150-200 pancreatic resections annually. The post is to start from October 2026. The contract is initially offered on a 12-month basis, but shorter or longer time periods will be considered. There is an expectation that the candidate will contribute to the senior registrar general surgery on call rota as part of this post, though this is negotiable.

The post would be ideally suited to a post CCT or senior fellow looking to gain specialist pancreatic surgery experience before applying for a substantive consultant post.

Main duties of the job

This post is attached to the Pancreatic surgery Unit at the Royal site, part . The individual will work on the senior specialist registrar tier and as such be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to this level. This post will be attractive to post-CCT individuals who require additional specialist training prior to applying for a consultant position.

Each doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, coding etc.) and presentations (M + M, MDT meetings etc.)

The unit performs in the order of 150-200 major pancreatic resections annually, including pancreato-duodenectomy, left pancreatectomy (open and laparoscopic) and chronic pancreatitis surgery. In addition, Liverpool provides complex pancreatitis care for the Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man. This includes a weekly benign MDT, and emergency surgery including Minimally invasive, open and endoscopic necrosectomies.

A successful candidate would expect to take part in excess of 60 major pancreatic resections in a 12-month period.

This unit has a strong research pedigree, having led on many international research trials that have defined current standards on pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis care worldwide. As such it would be expected that any candidate would be interested in contributing to the wealth of research opportunities provided.

The Hospital and Unit have teaching units. As such there is an expectation of a degree of teaching provision by the successful candidate.

Involvement in educational meetings, monthly Audit meetings, monthly M and M meetings, weekly benign MDT, weekly NET MDT, weekly Pancreatic MDT and Pancreatic Cyst MDTs.

Partake in the general on call rota. The Royal runs a 2-tier registrar on-call system, successful candidate will be on the senior registrar on call rota, providing out of hours support for the junior registrar currently this is on a 1 in 10 non-resident on call rota, and covering the inpatient admissions on a Monday to Friday 8am to 8 pm basis on a 1 in 10 rota. This may be subject to change depending on staffing levels.

Also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior.

  • MBBS (or equivalent).
  • Postgraduate examinations or equivalent - (e.g. FRCS, MRCS).
