Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint 2 full time Head and neck fellow's in Head and neck oncology with reconstruction from August 2026 for a 12 Month fixed term contract.
The Regional Maxillofacial Unit provides a comprehensive service in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to the residents of South Sefton and Liverpool and more broadly to Merseyside and Cheshire as a whole.
The Regional Unit operates a 'hub and spoke' arrangement with other hospitals in the region. Most major surgery carried out centrally at the hub (Aintree) and numerous outpatient and minor surgery arrangements peripherally in the spoke hospitals.
The successful candidate will also participate in the Specialty Trainee MFU 1:8 oncall from home rota.

Main duties of the job
Aintree is the largest UK Centre for major H&N surgery, with nearly 700 new cases referred through the MDT per annum. Primary surgery with microvascular flap reconstruction remains the mainstay and most effective therapeutic approach for locally advanced oral cavity malignancy, as well as selected cases from other Head and Neck mucosal and skin malignancies. Aintree currently employs five surgeons engaged in Head and Neck free flap reconstruction, typically around 150 cases per annum. The post would be targeted at a post-FRCS(OMFS) Peri/post-CCT OMFS trainees with specific interest and proven ability in oncology and reconstruction. The job plan would be optimised to allow two, 3-session lists per week to allow full engagement in all aspects of suitable cases. The job plan would also facilitate attendance at the Head and Neck clinic and weekly Head and Neck MDT. The candidate will have a central role in the preparation and presentation of patients in the MDT. It is expected of them to become involved with data collection and publish on the clinical outcomes of the unit.
The pay scale would be equivalent to national higher trainees at comparable level. On-call 1:8 would be available so that the individual would be responsible for out-of-hours monitoring and management of complex free-flap reconstruction.

The successful candidate will be exposed to all facets of head & neck surgery and reconstruction, with a focus on the oral cavity and midface.
The fellow will be expected to sustain daily involvement in all elements of patient care; ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre, and teaching/training for other surgical team members. The education and training of Oral & Maxillofacial registrars and more junior trainees will be an important component of the Fellowship, in preparation for assuming a future Consultant position (including supervision of clinical audit projects)
Surgical responsibility during the year will be tailored on a personalised basis depending on the candidates progress, with progressively increasing responsibility.
The successful candidate will have an introductory meeting within the first 4 weeks of their start date and again at 3-monthly intervals during the year. At the initial meeting with their educational supervisor, the Fellow will agree their expected ambitions and minimal standards that they are expected to achieve. In addition to regular informal trainer feedback, there will be periodic, formal written evaluation of progress with evaluation forms and this feedback, together with 360 degree evaluations, which will be reviewed after 6 months at the mid-point meeting to help guide the training focus for the second 6 months. It is mandatory that the candidate maintains an operative log during the fellowship, as well as further evidence when available e.g. patient feedback, reflective practice.
