Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist

Job summary

To deliver a comprehensive support service for patients diagnosed and suffering from cardiac arrhythmia's and promoting a seamless pathway of care for this patient group and ensuring individualised patient support, effective self-management and education. Acting as a resource point providing educational and clinical support to health professionals within primary & secondary care. Facilitating the implementation of NSF targets.

Main duties of the job

As an independent practitioner to assess patients in an outpatient clinic setting, assessing patients, history taking and examining patients and formulating a treatment plan with the the support of the ANP and Consultant Cardiologist. To assist in the running of the nurse led cardioversion service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Delivers a support service for patients with arrhythmias and their families to ensure they receive pertinent information regarding their condition with treatment alternatives explored and relative risks as per current research explained. There by empowering patients to make an informed choice.

2. Develops services in line with recommendations in the National Service Framework for CHD Chapter 8, NICE guidelines for AF and the European Society of Cardiology guidelines.

3. Uses highly specialist and well-developed communication skills to deal effectively with patient and family education needs, including breaking bad news, prognosis and dealing with emotive situations.

4. Works autonomously in day to day practice with support from the Consultant Cardiologist and Advance Nurse Practitioners (ANPs)

5. Provides a comprehensive clinical assessment of patients using advanced clinical knowledge and skills including pharmacology and use of antiarrhythmic/cardiology drugs obtained through completion of the Supplementary/Independent prescribers course.

6. Has the ability to carry out detailed assessments of patients arrhythmic risk utilising knowledge of ECG, Echocardiography, angiography and other cardiological diagnostic testing.

7. Appreciation and scrutiny of latest research developments applicable to arrhythmia care, management of sudden cardiac death, familial screening for genetic cardiac syndromes & device implantation.

8. Develops and implements policy and practice guidelines specific to the management of patients with arrhythmias to deliver high standards of care.

9. Liaises with other specialist services, clinical psychology, cardiac rehabilitation and heart failure services.

10. Participates in providing a long term follow up clinic in conjunction with cardiac physiologists and consultant Cardiologists.

11. Acts as a resource point providing education and support at local and regional level for health care professionals within Primary and Secondary care.

12. Develops and maintains effective audit systems for performance indication and future service development.

13. Actively participates in own personal development and performance review.

14. Develops and maintains good working relationships with cardiology colleagues

15. Participates in programs to raise profile of arrhythmia care at local regional and national level with membership & input to relevant professional bodies.

16. The ability to interpret complex investigations and acting accordingly to deliver evidence based clinical care, incorporating government initiatives and Cardiology guidelines.

17. To produce complex reports and is able to produce a good standard of written communication to report findings to other members of the multidisciplinary team, primary care, patients and their families.

19. To improve and enhance the patient experience by coming up with innovative ideas to enhance the service and continue to improve client/ patient relationships.
