Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part-time Research and Innovation Specialist Practitioner.The post duration is for 12 months initially, with an extension for up to 48 months upon mutual agreement.

This is an excellent opportunity for career development, ideal for a Senior Nurse or AHP. The successful candidate will be working within the Critical Care Research Team at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with flexibility to work across other areas of research on all LUHFT sites.

Training, support and mentorship will be provided for the innovation and research component throughout the duration of the post.The Critical Care research portfolio includes NIHR supported studies ranging from sepsis trials to perioperative studies ,research on organ failure and long-term outcomes of critical illness.

We have an interest in researching cardiovascular dysfunction during and after acute illness and hold several major grants covering arrhythmias, cardiovascular monitoring, rehabilitation, and vascular disease including stroke.

We closely collaborate with acute specialties including anaesthesia, emergency medicine, infectious diseases and haematology, having a proven track record in successfully recruiting into CRN portfolio studies.

Our external collaborators include University of Liverpool, the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Queens' University Belfast, and various commercial sponsors.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be involved in improvement activities around the innovation processframework and will gain experience in conducting innovation centred evaluation studies, gainknowledge of innovation methodology, governance (MHRA applications, new technique,new device governance), supporting grant applications for innovation and research activitiesand competitions, support applications to the Health Research Authority, the NationalResearch Ethics Committee and the New Technology and Device Group in collaboration withthe trust's corporate innovation team.This post will specifically cover two projects to develop and conduct research and innovationprojects promoting digital health:Cognishine a mixed methods feasibility study of web-based therapy sessions.NOTE-AF: Intelligent Monitoring to Predict Atrial Fibrillation, implements a mixed methodsstudy about patient acceptability and usability for health care professionals of a novel remotemonitoring device with automated alert function (WARD24).These projects will be approved in line with the research governance framework at LUHFTand thus requires knowledge of compliance with both innovation and research pathways.The role provides support in becoming an independent investigator, e. g. by registration andcompletion of the associate PI scheme (https://www.nihr.ac.uk/health-and-careprofessionals/career-development/associate-principal-investigator-scheme.htm) and todevelop as lead applicant for major funding streams.

The research and innovation specialist practitioner must be a strong advocate forresearch and patients and will be responsible for the day to day running of researchstudies including screening of potential patients, recruiting patients into studies accordingto agreed protocols, assisting in the informed consent process and management of allthe study related data and provide effective support to research participants. Extensiveexperience in Critical Care and/or High Dependency Units is essential.

The successful applicant must be enthusiastic with the ability to work independently andflexibily, to prioritise their own workload and to communicate effectively with all membersof the research and multidisciplinary team with the ability to meet deadlines to recruitpatients in line with targets and to contribute to ongoing research and innovation projects.

Successful contribution to these projects and may result in authorship of peer-reviewedinternational publications and/or presentations at a national or international conference.Special support will be provided for the post holders who wish to pursue a career inacademic medicine or any long term commitment in research and innovation.

All clinical research activity must be compliant and conducted in accordance withEuropean Union (EU) Directive, ICH/GCP International Conference on Harmonisationand Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
