Job summary
The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) role will be based in the department of Virology. We are looking for applicants with clinical laboratory experience to participate in the activities of the department.
Main duties of the job
The MLA will be expected to receive ad collate patient sample when they first arrive in the laboratory. Also to prepare samples received by the laboratory for analysis. The MLA will work with alongside a team of associate practitioners, BMS and Senior BMS.
The Medical Laboratory Assistant will participate primarily in night and late shifts and Saturday and Sunday work where appropriate.

Job responsibilities
- To receive and collate patients samples when they first arrive in the laboratory
- To perform the preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis
- To store and keep detailed archive of samples
- To maintain an up to date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory
- To perform any clerical duties required
- To bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples or any specimens that do not collate to the request form
- To prepare specimens received by the laboratory for analysis
- Work with the BMS staff to organise one's work
- To notify senior BMS staff of stock usage
- To use equipment safely in accordance with manufacturers instructions and local standard operating procedures
- To report any adverse incidents or non conformities or breaches of health and safety to a senior BMS
- Temperature monitoring of fridge, freezers, incubators and the environment
