Speciality Doctor Post in Emergency Medicine
This is full-time Staff Grade post based at the Liverpool University Hospital's Royal Liverpool Hospital site.
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to work at one of the most exciting Emergency Departments in the country. We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine to expand our current complement of doctors.
If you want to progress to inclusion on the Specialist Register via the 'CESR' route, we will guarantee funding for your essential secondments. We are also looking to employ Specialty doctors who do not wish to progress via the 'CESR' route. Despite the challenges of working in a busy acute and fast paced environment, we have a young, enthusiastic and dedicated group of 17 Consultants with a strong work ethic who are highly committed to providing world class patient care whilst maintaining long term sustainability to their work life balance.
Main duties of the job
We have excellent relations with our inpatient Speciality teams especially our colleagues in the Acute Medical and Surgical units and the Royal is a tertiary referral centre for many of the specialities in the region. We are offering a basic 10 PA contract on a flexible rota but we are open to discuss any specific or specialised job plan that you may desire, as long as you fit in with the collective work ethos that we have strived to create and are all equally as dedicated to preserve.
We have strong associations with the regional simulation centre as well as local sports teams and venues, all of which we encourage active involvement in.

Clinical Commitments The successful candidate will, together with the present middle grade team share the responsibility for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all patients attending the Emergency Department. This work includes late shifts weekly and contribution to weekend cover. Appropriate arrangements for continuing care of these patients will be made in conjunction with hospital and community colleagues.
AdministrationThe successful candidate will share the responsibility for the direct clinical supervision of junior medical and nursing staff.
He/she will be expected to be an active member of the Emergency Directorate Team, which consists of the following members:
Clinical DirectorConsultantsGeneral ManagerClinical Nurse SpecialistsDirectorate AccountantMatronDepartment Nurse Managers Teaching Commitments The junior medical staff are provided with 3 hours of formal teaching per week and the appointee will be expected to play a major role in this activity. He/she will also be involved in the teaching of nursing staff (including the Emergency Nurse Practitioners) and of medical students during their 8 week Emergency attachment. The Department is actively involved in the training of Paramedics who work in the Ambulance Service. Senior medical staff have a regular commitment to CPR and other training for junior medical staff in other specialties.AuditThe appointee will be expected to participate in and enhance the existing audit programme.Work CommitmentThe staff grade will work flexibly to provide extensive out of hours presence of senior medical staff within the Department and the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to such out of hours flexibility.
An experienced Emergency Physician is present within the Department 24 hours a day. Consultant presence routinely covers the hours 08.00-02.00 hours, 7 days a week.
The trust grade will be expected to account for 10 programmed activities per week .The breakdown of these activities will be discussed at job planning. It will be fairly flexible and accommodate all relevant needs of the individual.Continuing Professional DevelopmentThe appointee will accept responsibility for ensuring his/her own continuing professional development in for form of demonstrable CPD. Annual appraisal processes are in place within the Department.
Office and Clerical Staff Office space will be provided for the appointee, who will share the services of the Departmental Secretaries with Emergency Medical Staff.
Infection Control All medical staff must co-operate with infection control measure which are in place throughout the Trust and comply with any guidance and best practice relating to Infection Control.
All healthcare professionals have a statutory duty to promote ways for the service user and the community they serve to improve their own health and provide services to enable this to happen (e.g. smoking cessation, lifestyle and weight management).
MentoringThe Trust generates a mentoring programme for new doctors. On commencement, mentors can be allocated through discussion and agreement.
Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults All Trust employees are required to act in such a way that at all times safeguards the health and well-being of children and vulnerable adults. Familiarisation with and adherence to Trust Safeguarding policies is an essential requirement of all employees, as is participation in related mandatory/statutory training.
Management of Risk and Health & Safety All employees have a duty to take reasonable care to avoid injury to themselves or to others and to co-operate with the Trust in meeting its statutory requirements.
All employees will proactively contribute to the management of risk by identifying hazards in the workplace which have the potential to cause harm, raising issues of concerns and risk to the appropriate level.
