Job summary
For a number of years we have employed pharmacy students on a paid basis to work at the weekends within the dispensary at Aintree Hospital.
In the summer of 2024 we are looking for 4 enthusiastic hard working pharmacy students to join our busy dispensary at Aintree University Hospital. This opportunity has been beneficial to both student and the hospital.
Note: Whilst you will experience aspects of hospital pharmacy in a teaching hospital whilst on site that will benefit your future career. The annual placement is a paid employment and not the same as voluntary work or shadowing.
Applications will be accepted from current JMU undergraduate pharmacy students across all years.
Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK.
Main duties of the job
You will receive competency based training in dispensed medicines which will allow you to register with Aintree Hospital employment bank and be paid for weekend working.
The competency based training will consist of an at least an eight week full time training plan over the summer holidays (which you will be paid for)
In addition, there may be an option for you to work during term holidays in the future to support the dispensary. This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable hospital experience and help provide some extra funds.

Job responsibilities
- Dispense and issue medicines from the Pharmacy Department including extemporaneously prepared products, controlled drugs, unlicensed medicines, in accordance with the policies, procedures and safe systems of work, which prevail in the department at the time.
- Order and supply pharmaceuticals as part of the ward stock top-up service.
- Load medicines received into the automated dispensing machine.
- Answer basic reception queries within area of competence and refer to senior assistant / other pharmacy staff member as required.
- Input data into the Pharmacy computer system to ensure that all appropriate records are made and kept up to date.
- Receive medicines into the Pharmacy Department and ensure that the documentation and computer entry is carried out in a timely and accurate manner.
- Investigate and resolve delivery discrepancies, liaising with invoicing staff, making appropriate records of all investigations and outcomes.
- Ensure that all pharmaceutical preparations are stored appropriately.
- Rotate stock at the point of good receipt.
- Deal with routine enquiries.
- Ensure that all unused medicines (if appropriate) returned to the pharmacy are recycled in accordance with the safe systems of work and always participate in the safe disposal of medicines in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Manually handle IV fluids, bulk feed deliveries and manoeuvre cages and tote boxes for delivery toward/departments, outside clinics
- Deliver medicines to ward and departments as required.
- Deal with frequent interruptions e.g., telephone enquires from internal and external customers.
