Job summary
Liverpool University Dental Hospital is a Division within the LUHFT, providing dental care across all dental specialities through undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist service.
Applications are invited for the post of Senior Dental Nurse on the Paediatric / Orthodontic Department.
Applicants must hold appropriate professional General Dental Council registration, a recognised dental nurse qualification and a professionally recognised post registration qualification.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with excellent clinical and communication skills, who can work with the minimum of supervision to provide support and leadership to the dental nurse on the department.
Main duties of the job
To manage the department on a day-to-day basis and provide the highest quality dental nursing support to clinical staff within the department. The Senior Dental Nurse will be expected to work with the minimum of supervision, using their own initiative, and will carry out the duties in such a way as to make a direct and positive contribution to the organisation of the work and so aid the medical and dental staff to maximise the use of their time.

Job responsibilities
Ensure the advanced preparation of the clinical environment, instrumentation, materials, patient records and medication as appropriate, and take action as required.
Ensure specialist equipment is set up and all safety checks completed prior to use; documenting and acting on results accordingly.
Ensure cleanliness of environment is of the highest standards at all times.
Use experience and knowledge to explain procedures to patients/carers utilising the best method of communication for specialist nature of patients according to any additional needs.
Assisting with the patient consent process.
Provide Dental Nurse assistance during various procedures wherever required.
Monitoring patients progress throughout treatment/recovery to fitness for discharge and acting on results as appropriate.
Provide first line management of any emergencies which may arise during patient journey
Remove/dispose of equipment and sundries, including clinical waste, according to Trust Policy ensuring high standards of infection prevention and control at all times.
Ensure all written and verbal pre and post procedure instructions are given at the correct time for continued pre and post procedural care.
Obtain, maintain and update patient information data as required.
Responsible for the management of recording process for the documentation of drugs and medicines as appropriate.
Liaise with other health care professionals in matters regarding patient enquiries. In addition the post holder will have the following senior nurse responsibilities:
Organise adequate staffing levels and assignment of staff accordingly.
Allocation and supervision of Dental Nurse duties, prioritising tasks according to departmental needs.
Liaise with and support line manager to ensure provision of high standards of care and communication.
Adopt a proactive role in the integration and support of dental undergraduates and post graduate trainees.
Supervision and guidance of trainees at chair side.
Completion of Appraisals and PDP reviews for Registered Dental Nurses working within the clinic in line with Trust guidelines and procedures.
Provide HR support to line manager by assisting with recruitment, sickness absence management and promotion of professional conduct at all times.
Source and implement appropriate Health Promotion Topics for specialist patient cohort.
