Job summary

As a Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist you will be providing specialist symptom control assessment and advice and psychological support to patients and those identified as important to them. You will be contributing to the end of life strategy across the organisation to ensure patients with a life limiting illness receive the best possible treatment including end of life care.

You will support the Trust wide strategic education programme, providing education on relevant topics in palliative care to the generic work force, including; Advance care Planning, Personalised Plan of Care for the Dying Patient and Advanced Communications Skills Training.

We are seeking candidates with strong clinical leadership skills, an understanding of the specific needs of patients requiring palliative and end of life care, and a dedication and commitment to working as part of an integrated specialist team to provide evidence based expert clinical practice and education and training.

Candidates must have recent experience working as a palliative care clinical nurse specialist in an advisory team is preferable.

Main duties of the job

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidenced- based nursing care.Provide expert advice and clinical practice.Provide specialist education and training to others.Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues in the Integrated Mersey Palliative Care Team (IMPaCT) to develop services in order to deliver quality care.

Support the development of clinical services within the specialist field in line with national and local guidance which includes the NHS Cancer Plan, End of Life Care Strategy and NICE Supportive and Palliative Care guidance for Adults with Cancer and End Stage Disease.Participate in a rota that provides seven day a week (09.00 to 17:00) face to face working providing palliative care advice as per NICE guidelines. Participate in local, regional and national audit.

  • First Level Registered nurse on parts 1 or 12 of the NMC register
  • Recordable qualification in palliative care or oncology at post-reg Diploma level
  • ENB 998 or City & Guilds 730/7 or equivalent -Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice
  • Educated to Degree level equivalent in an appropriate area

Desirable

  • Formal Masters degree

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience - relevant experience including a position of responsibility at Band 6 or above
  • Demonstrable experience within a relevant speciality
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of national policies influencing cancer and palliative care
  • Excellent presentation skills & experience at presenting information to professional groups

Desirable

  • To have published in a peer reviewed journal
