Consultant Surgeon in Renal Transplant
The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Surgeon in Renal Transplant.
The post is based at Royal Liverpool Hospital and is to join an enthusiastic team dedicated to providing a high-quality kidney transplant service for patients in Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales, and further afield.
The post is equivalent to 10PAs per week inclusive of 1.5 SPA time allocated to undertake all necessary continuing professional development (CPD). The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to participate in the Cadaveric and Living Donor Renal Transplant programme, and contribute to audit, clinical and laboratory research as required. The Unit also undertakes vascular/peritoneal access and general surgery work for dialysis patients and the post holder will be expected to contribute to this work. The post holder will also be responsible for providing vascular access to University Hospital Aintree patients.
Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights. Proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview.

Job responsibilities
The Unit provides surgical services to all patients suffering from renal failure in Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, including vascular and peritoneal dialysis access, general, endocrine and renal surgical procedures as well as transplantation. Organ transplants constitute 25% of the units theatre activity. The unit undertakes approximately 350-400 vascular access procedures a year and 50 procedures related to peritoneal dialysis.
Around 300 patients are currently awaiting renal transplantation and approximately 120- 130 transplants are performed per annum. The unit has a thriving live donor programme that incorporates Total Reteroperitoneoscopic Live Donor nephrectomy (pioneers in UK) The unit actively participates in the national paired/pooled exchange Programme. The unit has all necessary approvals to start the Transplant Programme from Hep C Donors and envisage to perform from January2024 onwards. Transplant clinics are run jointly by participating surgeons and physicians and are attended by the nurse clinicians. Patients from North Wales are considered for shared care or transfer to the referring physicians.
There are 3.5 equivalent recipient coordinators managing the patients on the waiting list, and act as contact points with the regional dialysis network. There are two Living donor coordinators managing the direct and paired/pooled exchange programme. In-house tissue typing and cross matching are provided by the Department of Immunology on a 24-hour basis. All the surgical staff, in co-operation with the transplant co-coordinators, is expected to take part in the education program necessary to sustain and expand the supply of the organ donors from these hospitals.
The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is fully equipped for all routine and special investigations, including CT, MRI and nuclear imaging. The transplant unit also has an in-house colour Doppler scanner. There are on-line computer links to haematology, clinical chemistry and immunology. The Trust has two Da Vinci robots and is planning to purchase third in order to fulfil the increasing demand of Robotic surgery. The unit is looking to develop robotic transplant Programme and we welcome candidate who will have experience in minimal invasive surgery and will be interested in developing robotic-assisted surgery.
