We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced pharmacy assistant to join the homecare team based at Aintree Hospital.

Main duties of the job

An opportunity has arisen for a full time permanent post for a higher level pharmacy assistant band 3 to develop and implement homecare using computerised systems at Aintree University Hospital

The individual will be required to possess an NVQ 2 in pharmacy services, have the ability to work on their own initiative and as part of a team.

Job responsibilities

1) To maintain the dispensing robot, JAC computer system, perform backups, fault diagnostics and monitor performance.

2) Liaise with Specialist Pharmacists and finance regarding the development and production of statistical and financial drug transactions

3) To liaise with JAC/Rowa personnel, IT staff, pharmacy staff and other stake holders under the direction of the computer systems manager in relation to maintaining the functionality of the dispensary Robot and computer system.

4) To identify, organise and provide individual training for new andexisting pharmacy staff on existing and new software/technologies (e.g. JAC, Pharmacy Robot) and encourage pharmacy staff to develop their knowledge base in IT.

5) To deputise for the Pharmacy Computer Systems Manager in their absence.

6) To carry out dispensing of prescriptions, including extemporaneous prescriptions, unlicensed drugs, in-patient and out-patient prescriptions in accordance with the agreed safe systems of work practice.

7) To assist in routine duties in the dispensary including maintenance of stock levels, checking expiry dates and ensuring a tidy work environment.

8) To participate in ensuring the efficient running of the dispensary, including sending and receiving prescriptions via the air tube and using the prescription tracker software system.

9) To undertake basic patient counselling in the out-patient area of the pharmacy in accordance with pharmacy procedures and under the supervision of a pharmacist or technician.

10) To provide a top-up service for stock items held on wards and departments, including checking stock levels and placing newly ordered items into stock.

11) To process orders using the Pharmacy JAC computer system.

12) To input data into the pharmacy computer system as necessary and to produce information such as computerised picking lists.

13) To produce and transmit orders using computerised systems.

14) To assist in the receipt, storage and issue of pharmaceutical products including the maintenance of manual and computerised records.

15) To undertake, under appropriate supervision, routine procedures connected with the preparation and packing of pharmaceutical products, including aseptic techniques.

16) To observe the recommendations contained in the Guide to Good Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practice and its supplements and to assist in ensuring that work carried out in the department is in accordance with these and any other recommendations which may be issued from time to time by the Department of Health or Medicines Inspectorate.

17) To observe the regulations in respect of the Health and Safety at WorkAct and Data Protection Act.

18) To assist in maintaining reasonable stock levels, in accordance with the policies that are in force and to assist in ensuring correct storage and turnover of stock to maintain quality and potency.

19) To attend appropriate training courses for Assistants, to encourage other staff to undertake further training and to participate in such training schemes as necessary to keep relevant pharmaceutical clinical and technical knowledge up to date.

20) To participate in Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday and late night duties as is considered appropriate by the Chief Pharmacist or pharmacy management.

21) To participate in ward based stock audits under the direction of the Dispensary Manager or Stores Manager.
