Applications are invited for a substantive Senior Healthcare Scientist within LCL. This is an excellent opportunity to join the largest provider of specialist histological pathology services in Cheshire and Merseyside.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative Senior Biomedical or Clinical Scientist who possess excellent communication skills to lead are clinical archive, research and clinical trials teams. The successful applicant will have considerable leadership experience within a laboratory setting and preferably have knowledge and experience of research and clinical trials processes and good laboratory practice.

This histology laboratory operates 0700-1900 Monday to Friday and 0800-1600 Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays
Main duties of the job
This person will manage the directorate's archive, ensuring robust processes are in place and that full audit trails are available for all tissue send aways and returns. This person will also play a key role in the implementation of the Cellular Pathology research strategy. This will require close working with the key internal and external stakeholders, including University of Liverpool Biobanking teams.
The successful candidate will be responsible for liaising with clinical trial and research projects, ensuring adherence to good laboratory practice and research governance, working within the relevant regulatory frameworks.
This person will also work closely with Tertiary education organisations in Liverpool to identify and support projects that will assist our trainee Biomedical Scientists and those staff who are undertaking Masters' projects. This will involve writing applications for charitable funding and other funding bids in collaboration with Principal Investigators and University staff.
This person will assist with the line management of histology laboratory staff and assist with the day-to-day operations of the laboratory when required.

Job Summary
To provide day to day management of the histology clinical archive, research and clinical trials in collaboration with the histology laboratory manager, Cellular Pathology Service Manager and Clinical Director.
To provide all line management duties for the histology laboratory team being managed.
Key responsibilities
- Facilitate the provision of the clinical archive services of the histology laboratory by supervising and instructing staff and maintaining resources.
- Ensure adherence to Good Laboratory Practice at all times
- Ensure adherence to Research and Clinical Trials governance and protocol at all times
- Act as a central point of contact for Principal Investigators, Clinical Trials Coordinators and other research staff
- Communicate to the Laboratory Manager such information as is required to maintain the continuing provision of the services.
- Communicate to and assist the Laboratory Manager with personnel or personnel related problems.
- Deputise for the Laboratory Manager in their absence.
- Undertake training of scientific and support staff.
- Maintain adequate consumable and reagent stock levels.
- Act as a training officer for the department
Main Tasks:
- Supervise staff, organise and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.
- Ensure lower grades of scientific and scientific support staff comply with Health and Safety protocols as set out in relevant documentation and that laboratory and surrounding area also comply with Health and Safety.
- Assist in the validation and verification and production of Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory analyses, use of equipment and care of the working environment.
- Facilitate the keeping of adequate stocks of reagents and consumables, including those under rigorously controlled temperature environments, as appropriate for each product, to ensure patient safety.
- Maintain maintenance contract for temperature monitoring system in the laboratory.
- Undertake audits according to departmental schedule.
- Co-ordinate all aspects of NEQAS registration and EQA submissions.
- Audit Histology error logs to identify and resolve problem areas, identify areas for improvement though rigorous root cause analysis and corrective and preventative action
- Gather, analyse and troubleshoot monthly operational statistics for the Directorate Manager.
- Arrange analyser service contracts for the laboratory as required and monitor maintenance for RLUH site.
- Requisition repairs of laboratory or equipment by the hospital estates department.
- Arrange annual maintenance contracts for laboratory equipment, standing orders and consumables including all sites where appropriate.
- Perform appraisals.
- Undertake costing and billing for trial and research related activity.
