Job summary

If you're a newly qualified or experienced band 5 physiotherapist that's passionate about weight management, behaviour change and working as part of a team, then the Ashton, Leigh and Wigan (ALW) Specialist Weight Management service is for you.This specialist service supports people living with obesity across the Wigan Borough.

The pioneering team are at the forefront of weight management services, and were one of the first in the country to introduce NICE Guidelines for liraglutide prescription within tier 3. The service is one of three well established Tier 3 services lead by Prof John Wilding and delivered by Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust.

You will have a broad knowledge of physiotherapy and must be able to work within a changing environment whilst maintaining a busy and varied caseload. You will feel valued and supported, working alongside a committed and innovative multi-disciplinary team, with a wealth of weight management experience. The team includes: consultants, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and assistant practitioners. The role is varied and highly rewarding, with opportunities for personal and professional development.

This post is primarily based within the community of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, but you must also be willing to attend meetings/training at Aintree Hospital when necessary. Working one evening per week is preferable but not essential and flexible working patterns can be accommodated.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with other members of the MDT, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the physiotherapy aspect of the service to patients living with obesity and with obesity-related health conditions. This includes patient assessment, care planning and implementation of personalised plans tailored to the individual. The role offers the opportunity to blend a wide range of physiotherapy skills, well-being interventions and behaviour change techniques. Training in motivational interviewing will be provided.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with patients in both a group and 1:1 setting (face to face, telephone and virtual) and will help individuals manage their weight with conservative approaches, as well as supporting patients wishing to pursue bariatric surgery. You will also support hydrotherapy sessions and help pregnant women manage their weight, health and optimise their lifestyle through pregnancy. As such, the role of a weight management physiotherapist is varied and can be highly rewarding.

You will also take an active role in MDT meetings, and support the development of other staff including students. The ability to work collaboratively is essential.
